Joe Bon Giovanni has served as a lifeguard at Asbury Park Beach for 57 years, beginning his career in 1968. Over the decades, he has built strong friendships and trained numerous lifeguards, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures to keep swimmers safe. 

Recently, Bon Giovanni was involved in a rescue operation where three swimmers were caught in a rip current. At 75 years old, he continues to play an active role in ensuring beach safety, earning recognition for his lifelong dedication and service.

When you've been guarding the same stretch of ocean for nearly 60 years, somebody call me. Sometimes the ocean comes calling. On Sunset and just like that, instincts kick in. Long before the call, Joe Bon Giovanni was already watching. He's been a lifeguard here for 57 years. See the summer after high school in 1968, Joe was just looking for a little extra cash. What he found was a lifelong purpose. Over the years, I've made lifetime friendships with guys that I've worked with here. I mean, you come very close here. You basically depend on each other for your lives. You don't spend all those summers in the sand, just protecting swimmers. Joe trains the protectors. She knows that around this tide, it's always starts to rip over in that corner. So she's moving everybody out of that corner so that they don't get in trouble. So it's preventive lifeguarding. Generations of lifeguards have learned from the best. That the real skill isn't sprinting into the surf. It's watching the water before it turns. Lifeguarding is 90% prevention. We don't want to make a million rescuers. We want to keep people out of trouble. We just finished talking about rip currents and how fast they can pull someone beyond the sandbar. And then it happened. They got a situation on South Jump. In an instant, the conversation stopped. The engine roared to life. And by the time we arrived, the others were already in the water. Three swimmers swept beyond the sandbar, caught in the unrelenting grip of a rip current. That's them holding onto the torp and line, that torpedo-shaped buoy tethered by a rope and built to save. At the shore end of the rope, a 75-year-old man still answering the call. Joe's still got it. Yes, the swimmers made it back safely and were met with something rare, but well-earned. And for a moment, the beach paused and recognized the quiet heroes who never stopped watching. Good job.
