But it faces an uphill battle to convince the Iran-backed Shia movement without reigniting its civil war. In a televised speech, Hezbollah's leader reiterated how committed the group remained to its military arsenal. This government decision does not have national consensus. We will not abandon the weapons that protect us from our enemy. We will not allow Israel to roam freely in our country and kill the resistance fighters and seize the south. Hezbollah's making any discussion of disarmament conditional on the Jewish state withdrawing from its five positions in Lebanon, a schedule that clashes with Israel's, which signalled it would reduce its presence in Lebanon after the Lebanese army acted to disarm Hezbollah. Another uncertainty is the future of the UN peacekeeping mission, UNIFIL. France and Lebanon want to renew the Blue Helmets mandate, unlike Israel and the United States. The latter signalling Tuesday it would only approve their extension for one more year.
