Windsurfing is gaining popularity in Seoul, South Korea, where lessons are available on the Han River, set against the backdrop of the city’s skyline. The school is run by Jeon Seong-geun, a former national windsurfing champion who participated in the opening ceremony of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Jeon’s school is located near the Olympic Stadium and welcomes newcomers to the sport, teaching them the basics on land before heading out onto the water.

Participants start by learning fundamental techniques such as gripping the boom and changing hand positions before practicing on the river. While beginners may experience some falls, they are encouraged to persevere and enjoy the unique experience of windsurfing through the cityscape. The activity offers a distinctive way to engage with Seoul’s urban environment and its vibrant sporting culture.

We're learning to windsurf, not in Hawaii, not in Tahiti, but here in the middle of the city in Seoul, South Korea. When lunch hour hits, people in the heart of this megalopolis absolutely shred. Wind foilers and windsurfers on Seoul's Han River, right in the shadow of one of the world's tallest buildings. Among them is former South Korean national windsurfing champion, Jeon Seong-geun. Thank you. Jeon tells us he was one of the windsurfers who sailed in the opening ceremony of the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. And 37 years later, his windsurfing school is right across the river from the Olympic Stadium. I want to teach people who are new to windsurfing one thing at a time, and when I see how they do it, I feel satisfied and fulfilled. I'm doomed. Okay, so we have to lift. I'm one of those students starting from scratch. Is it like riding a bike? Like you get used to it on the water? First, the basics on land, how to grip the boom, changing hand positions, and then, it's off to the river to sail with this crowd. Turn, turn, turn, turn, turn. Okay, sailing right. Whoa, okay. There was a lot of falling at first. Come on! But you get back up. Backflip. Go through the motions. Stay, stay, stay. And in no time. There we go. Yeah! Woo! Much harder than it looks.
