In today's Forecast Feed, Bernie Rayno takes a look at a storm that could have an impact on playoff games this coming weekend.

A major storm system is forecast to move across the Midwest and Northeast, bringing a mix of rain, snow, and strong winds that are expected to impact several NFL playoff games. The system will first bring rain to cities like Des Moines, St. Louis, Chicago, and Michigan before colder air moves in, shifting precipitation to snow in areas such as Madison, Green Bay, and the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Weather conditions will vary across playoff locations: Chicago is expected to experience strong winds and flurries with wind chills in the single digits, while Philadelphia and Jacksonville may see gusty winds affecting play. Other venues, such as Carolina, New England, and Pittsburgh, are forecast to have milder conditions with minimal weather disruptions.

Late-week storm to impact playoff games

This may be my favorite forecast feed of all time. You know why? I'm going to merge my two passions. Weather and football. We're going to talk about a little bit of NFL action. Playoffs are set. I'm going to go over the games. I'm going to talk about a storm during the Midwest that will impact almost all the games in some way, shape, or form this weekend. First, let's take you out to the Pacific right now. This is going to be the key to the weekend here. Weather in the Midwest. You've got two storms. You have this one, which is going to come in here, then come across the U.S. as we get into Wednesday. But then this one, this mess, you've got two pieces with this, here and here. These will come eastward as well. And this is what's going to produce snow across the Midwest as we move into the weekend here. So, lots to talk about here. Let me get to this. Let me show you what this is going to look like here as we head toward the week here. All right. First of all, let's start on Tuesday morning. So here's the upper low. It's off California. Now what this is going to do is, this is going to come across the Southwest as we get into Wednesday and Thursday. Let's track it, right? I'm just going to show you the European model. The GFS, the American model, is the same. Here it comes across the Southwest Wednesday night and then into the Southwest on Thursday. Here it is. Now, this will then move to the North and East, but you'll notice there's no cold air. Look at the wind flow out of the West-Southwest. Let me show you the surface map for this exact time on Thursday. So there's the storm, but you see this blue line here? This is roughly the rain-snow line, right? Anything North and West of this line is cold enough for snow. Everything to the Southeast is warm enough for rain, right? So if you follow it, this storm moves to the Northeast. It's a rain producer. So this is going to produce rain, Des Moines, St. Louis, Chicago, all across Michigan. It's just, there's no cold air with it. Behind it, watch what happens here. Let me go back to Thursday morning. Here's the rain-snow line. Look where it is, across South Dakota and Northern Minnesota. As this storm goes by, watch it come South. By Friday morning, all of a sudden, that rain-snow line goes to about, well, Madison, Des Moines, and all the way in toward the Southwest. So there's an injection of cold air coming in, not real cold, but cold enough for snow behind this storm. And basically, what you have going on here is you have a frontal boundary that then stalls right in here behind this storm, and you've got additional energy coming in. Let me show you the upper air pattern again. So here it comes. So here comes those two pieces of energy I talked about here. There it is Wednesday morning. You see, it's right in here. Here's your next system. Here's your first one. This goes by, and this follows. Watch it by the time we get into Thursday. Here it comes, right in here. Now, what will happen is, is that this Southern piece is the storm. This will get guided to the Northeast by the Northern piece, which will bring even colder air into the storm on the backside. Watch it move to the South, North, and East. There it goes. There it goes. You see the upper low cut off just to the West of Kansas City? That tells me your snow area is going to be back in here, from about Green Bay toward Des Moines. Watch that go Northward. You see that? Let me show you the surface map with it. So here we go. Wednesday morning, here comes the storm, and there it goes. You see that? There's Saturday morning. So it looks to me like you're going to be looking at some snow, North Central Kansas. Probably about a three to six inch storm. There'll be some blowing snow with that. Probably stays North and West of Kansas City. I think there'll be a couple of inches of snow from Des Moines to Rochester, Minnesota. It looks to me like this snow's South and East of Rochester. And then the snow starts picking up as the storm strengthens. You go from 1,003 millibars to 995. Watch that area from Madison, Green Bay up toward the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. That's where you could be looking for six inches or more. Look at the time frame. We're talking about Saturday. And then that storm moves through the Northeast on Sunday. So that's going to impact a lot of the NFL games here. I want to go over them with you here. And let me do this and I want to get rid of the bug here. There we go. Okay. Let's go over the games. We begin in Carolina. Frontal boundary comes through here late in the game, but out ahead of it. It's going to be very warm. Temperatures in the 60s, little bit of a breeze. Not many problems here. But take a look at what's going on in Chicago. Now let me go back to something here really quick. You've got the storm coming right over Chicago in the afternoon. That's one o'clock. Then it departs. Now, I think there could be a few flurries, but the big story in Chicago is look at these lines, isobars, lines of equal pressure. The more you see, the windier it's going to be. This tells me it's going to be very windy for the Green Bay-Chicago game. Let me show you the forecast. Look at these winds. Now, temperatures in the 20s. There'll be some flurries before the game and during the game. Here's the other story. Accurate with a real field temperature, single numbers to lower teens during the game, and these winds are definitely going to play havoc here. Now, let's go back to our surface map here. On Sunday, the big story is the storm leaves, right? And then you have a cold front. This is Sunday morning. You have a frontal boundary coming through the northeast, and this front will make it all the way down into Jacksonville. What does that mean? Well, you'll be dealing with that front in Jacksonville. Some gusty winds out of the north. I think the wind could be a little gusty and play a little havoc. Temperatures around 70 degrees. Temperature's not a problem. I just think the wind may be a little bit of a problem here. Now, Sunday afternoon, frontal boundary is through Philadelphia. Winds here we have especially early. These are the sustained between, you know, 10 and 20 miles per hour. You can get gusts to 30. So I think wind may be a problem here. Accurate with a real field temperatures in the 30s. In New England, I don't think this is the one game I don't think there's a problem on Sunday. The wind's not going to be all that bad for Los Angeles and New England. Out of the west, but it's not going to be all that bad. Temperatures in the 30s. And then we end Monday night in Pittsburgh. Good game here. It's actually pretty warm for this time of year with temperatures in the 30s. We'll have more about that Midwest storm, and we'll keep an eye on the NFL playoff picture weather as well as we go through the week. And that's the Feed.
