The mosquito population in Las Vegas has increased alongside the city's growth, raising concerns about potential health risks. Researchers at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) are encouraging residents to complete a survey to help track mosquito activity across the region.

The information collected will assist researchers in identifying areas with high mosquito activity and those that remain relatively unaffected. This data will be used to inform state leaders and guide mosquito control efforts. Residents are also advised to take preventative measures, such as draining standing water and using repellents, to reduce mosquito exposure.

A LOT OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT SEEING THEM THIS SUMMER, AND UNLV SAYS THAT THERE'S ACTUALLY SOMETHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT. YOU CAN LET THEM KNOW IF YOU'RE SEEING MOSQUITOES IN YOUR HOME. TAKE A LOOK. IT'S THE SOUND THAT CAN TURN A QUIET NIGHT ON THE PATIO INTO PURE ANNOYANCE, AND EXPERTS SAY AS LAS VEGAS GROWS, SO DOES ITS MOSQUITO POPULATION. You know, we've always had them, but this particular species is so aggressive and is spreading like wildfire. So I think that's why a lot more of the community are, yeah, being much more responsive and going, hey, yeah, we now have mosquitoes and we're not happy about it. UNLV IS ASKING RESIDENTS TO FILL OUT THIS SURVEY BY OCTOBER, SO RESEARCHERS CAN PINPOINT MOSQUITO HOT SPOTS AND SHOW STATE LEADERS WHERE ABATEMENT MAY BE NEEDED. To be honest, we're just as interested in the parts of town that seem to be mosquito-free for the moment, because longitudinally next year when we come back and we sit down and go, okay, what data are going to be helpful, maybe we should go to the places that aren't as infested and see if things have changed. MOSQUITOES AREN'T JUST A NUISANCE, THEY CAN CARRY DISEASES, AND RESEARCHERS SAY THE TIME TO ACT IS BEFORE TEMPERATURES WARM UP NEXT SPRING. We're trying to collect some of those data so that we can have those decisions at the slightly higher governance level and be able to at least provide data and help inform at least our opinion about what we can do to control mosquitoes. SO WHILE THE VALLEY CONTINUES TO GROW, THE BATTLE AGAINST THE BUZZ IS JUST GETTING STARTED. Those are entirely unnecessary. Nobody should be suffering from an illness that's being transmitted by a mosquito. They are not that straightforward to control, but there are options. While we can't control the mosquito population, we can take some preventative factors, so make sure that all still water is drained if you have any in your backyards, and also wear repellent if you're attractive to the mosquitoes, but you can also fill that survey out on ktnv.com slash mosquito, Anjali. And Haley, I know those mosquitoes have really been bugging you this summer, you've mentioned that to us before, but for those of us who've been lucky enough to not see too much mosquito activity in our area, should we still fill out that survey? Yeah, I'm not sure why I'm very attractive to the mosquito. They say it's the scent that you have, your natural scent. So if you are like me at home and you feel like you're getting attracted, it's because of your natural scent. But if you aren't, you are one of the lucky ones.
