The U.S. Labor Department's Office of Inspector General has notified the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) that it is launching a review into the agency's data collection procedures. The review will examine the challenges and mitigation strategies related to collecting the Producer Price Index (PPI), Consumer Price Index (CPI), and monthly employment data, including how revisions are handled.

This development follows the recent dismissal of the BLS commissioner and public statements by the Labor Secretary affirming a commitment to modernize and improve the accuracy of labor data. No specific timeline for the review has been provided, but the process is set to begin immediately.

Hey Megan Carl good morning This is the Labor Department's Office of Inspector General is now informing the BLS It is initiating a review of the challenges that the BLS faces in collecting some of its most closely watched data So in a letter written to the acting commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics The inspector general says they're focusing on two things here on the challenges and related mitigating strategies for collecting PPI and CPI Data as well as collecting and reporting including revising the monthly employment data So this of course being the next step after the president moved to fire the BLS commissioner last month now saying they're going to Initiate this internal review to take a look more closely at the data collection efforts And I will flag guys this comes just a day after the Labor Secretary Lori Chavez de Riemer was writing on Twitter on X I should say that the Labor Department is committed to finding solutions to the problems in the data including by modernizing To improve transparency and deliver more accurate and timely data. So moving forward here on this There's no timeline laid out here, but some sort of review will get started now guys
