A Kenyan high court has ordered the arrest of a British national on charges of murdering a local woman near a British army training ground in central Kenya 13 years ago, court officials said Tuesday.

A Kenyan court has issued an arrest warrant for a former British soldier suspected in the death of Agnes Wanjiru, a local woman whose body was discovered in a septic tank in 2012 near a British Army training facility. The court has also restricted the publication of the suspect's name and announced that an extradition request will be initiated.

Wanjiru was last seen leaving a bar with British soldiers, and her daughter has since been cared for by family members. The UK Defence Secretary previously met with Wanjiru's relatives, pledging support for justice. The United Kingdom maintains a military presence in Kenya, with ongoing concerns from local residents regarding the conduct of British forces.

Prosecutors stated in a press release that an extradition request will now be initiated. The body of 21-year-old Agnes Wanjir was found in a septic tank in April 2012 in Nanyuki, north of Mount Kenya, weeks after witnesses said she was seen leaving a bar with British soldiers. Wanjiru's daughter, who was five months old when her mother disappeared and is now 13, has remained in the care of her grandmother and aunt. In April, UK Defence Secretary John Helley had met with Wanjiru's relatives and vowed to help the family secure the justice they deserve. The United Kingdom has approximately 200 military personnel permanently stationed in Kenya. Most of them currently are training more than 1,000 Kenyan soldiers a year before their deployment to neighbouring Somalia to combat al-Qaida. Long-time East Africa affiliate Al-Shabaab Kenyans have in the past raised concerns about the way British forces treat local residents and the environment in their training ground.

On the same day a ground offensive was launched in Gaza City, a United Nations Commission of Inquiry report concluded Israel has committed genocide in Gaza, a finding emphatically denied by Israeli officials.
