California gubernatorial candidate Katie Porter has publicly acknowledged that she could have managed certain situations with her staff more effectively. In a recent interview, Porter stated she values her team's work and recognizes the need to better express her appreciation for their efforts. The conversation follows the release of videos highlighting her management approach, an issue that has surfaced before during her time in Congress. 

The discussion comes amid a competitive primary race and ongoing debates within the Democratic Party about generational leadership. The segment also touched on other political contests, including a Senate race in Massachusetts and the New York mayoral campaign, reflecting broader themes of change and candidate backgrounds.

Do you have the temperament to be the next governor of California? When I look at those videos, I want people to know that I understand that I could have handled things better. I think I'm known as someone who's able to handle tough questions, who's willing to answer questions. And I want people to know that I really value the incredible work that my staff can do. I think people who know me know I can be tough, but I need to do a better job expressing appreciation for the amazing work that my team does. Eleanor, it took a few days for that to come out, but she sat down and took a question and gave an answer. She did, and she was pretty frank with it. You know, I think she used a line she's used in statements responding to things like this in the past. Whether it's enough, I think, to sway voters remains to be seen. Still a lot of time, Sabrina, for this race to gel. There is a lot of time. I think this created an opening, though, for her rivals. This is a big primary field for the governor's race, and she has been viewed as sort of the clear front-runner in these recent months. Based on name recognition, mostly. Yeah. And that may have a negative tinge to it now that wasn't there before. And I think this draws attention to the fact that this is not the first time this conversation is happening, as Eleanor mentions. You know, this is something that came up during her time as a member of Congress, and now to see it come up again, I think it was notable in her interview as well that she could not say that there are not other videos like the ones that have come out. She was asked about that. She kind of sidestepped that question. So, I think, one, we have the open question, like, are we going to see more of these videos? But I think also this is something, again, that her opponents are going to be seizing on, and it's really unflattering for her as a candidate. I mentioned earlier in the show that—or at the top of the show, in the cold open—that's what we call it, folks, the cold open—that this generational conversation with the Democratic Party continues. It's showing no sign of ending. If anything, the velocity appears to be increasing. There was another example of it today. Seth Moulton, member of the House, announcing he's running against Ed Markey, Massachusetts Democrat for the United States Senate. Let's watch. Our party has clung to the status quo, insisted on using the same old playbook, and isn't fighting hard enough. We're in a crisis, and with everything we learned last election, I just don't believe Senator Markey should be running for another six-year term at 80 years old. Everything we learned in the last election, 80 years old. Don't have to be a rocket science to translate that, Sabrina. I mean, I think what's interesting here is to see the congressman so transparently say this is about age, this is about a generational shift. It cannot be enough. Is that enough? I mean, I think that's the conversation we've been having since last year. You know, I think that President Biden and his stepping aside and everything that happened around the 2024 election has really opened up that conversation in a way that we weren't necessarily having a few years ago. When it comes to Senator Markey, I think it's interesting, too. In 2020, he faced a generational shift election, as well. He faced a challenger in Joe Kennedy. And obviously, he came out of that victorious. He was able to shore up support from progressives at the time. And, you know, you had—I remember just earlier today, I was listening to AOC back then said, you know, it's about the age of his ideas, not his age. But I don't know how that's going to stick today, given the conversations we are having in the Democratic Party around Biden and around other members who have maybe stayed past the time they needed to. And, Ed, Markey got a welcome endorsement from Elizabeth Warren. Yeah, I think it'll be interesting to see where other Democratic senators come out on this. I think a lot of them, especially coming off, you know, former President Joe Biden and the things that have come out since he stepped down about his age, are going to be sensitive to defending someone who will be 86 when his term ends, versus, you know, saying maybe this guy who's in his 40s could be good at the job, as well. All right. Play the Cuomo ad that we have cued up, and we'll get up, like, 10 seconds for each of you on the other side. Play it now, hurriedly. My friend here, Mr. Mamdani, is running to be the mayor of America's largest city. But his critics say, who would hire someone with such a blank resume? Let's find out. His mom's like a multimillionaire filmmaker. It's like a Nepo baby. You guys think he could get a job at Ebonox? Is he qualified? Oh, shoot. Sabrina, little levity in the New York mayor's race. The rare levity that we get to see in one of these races. But I think as we get closer to the election, of course, we see former Governor Cuomo's fear of losing to Mamdani. Eleanor, 10 seconds. I think it's fascinating because there's a little bit of resentment on Adam's part that he had to drop out when Cuomo was able to stay in. And so, now that he's pivoting in this mutual distrust of Mamdani is a fascinating development. Fascinating, indeed.
