Gareth Ward, a member of the New South Wales Parliament representing Kiama, has been found guilty of three acts of indecency and one count of sexual intercourse without consent. The offences involved two victims, aged 18 and 24 at the time, who were both intoxicated when invited to Ward's home after separate social events in 2013 and 2015. 

The jury unanimously rejected the defence's arguments and acknowledged the power imbalance between Ward and his victims. Ward was released on bail and is required to report to police daily while the court considers whether he will be jailed ahead of sentencing.

Nine weeks on trial, a trademark grin and a wave. Today, Gareth Ward was found to be a sexual predator. The Kiama MP found guilty of three acts of indecency and one count of sexual intercourse without consent. Ward's two victims were aged 18 and 24 at the time. They were both intoxicated when they were invited to the state MP's home and thought they were staying in a spare bed. The assaults occurred at Potts Point after a Parliament House function in 2015 and after a party in the Shoalhaven in 2013. Before they were asked to consider their verdict, Crown Prosecutor Monica Knowles told the jury the incidents did not happen by random chance or dumb luck. Same setting, same man, same conclusion. The 12-person jury agreed unanimously. One of Ward's victims told the court he repeatedly said no and Ward persisted. I felt a little dirty and confused, he said. Had I not verbalised the no as loudly as I should have, should I have pushed him off sooner? Should I have just gone home? I at no stage said yes or gave him any indication that I was pleased with what was going on. The jury rejected the defence's argument that a person who was sexually assaulted would not continue to call their abuser names like love or apply for political roles with him. They acknowledged the power imbalance between Ward and his victims. Ward was this afternoon released on bail and must report to police once daily. Next Wednesday, the court will decide if he will be jailed before a date for sentencing is set. Will Mr Ward be appealing this conviction? It's not common. Sarah Naven, 10 News.
