Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price has been stepped down from the Liberal Party frontbench by Opposition Leader Sussan Ley, following the former's remarks about Indian migrants.

Senator Jacinta Nampajimpa Price has stepped down from her role as shadow minister for defence industry and personnel at the request of Coalition leader Susan Lee. This follows controversy over Price's comments suggesting the government was favouring Indian migrants to bolster Labor's vote, remarks she later clarified but did not apologise for. 

The incident led to public and internal calls for an apology, particularly from the Indian community and Liberal colleagues. After Price reiterated her refusal to apologise and declined to endorse Susan Lee's leadership at a press conference, Lee stated that Price had failed to meet the standards expected of shadow ministry members. Price has accepted the decision and expressed regret for not being clearer in her comments.

This evening Senator Jacinta Numbajimba-Price was asked by her leader, Susan Lee, to step down, and she complied. It means that she will no longer sit on the Coalition frontbench. She was the shadow minister for defence industry and personnel, so was in the shadow ministry but sat outside cabinet, so she wasn't in the key decision-making group. This dates back to a week ago, when the senator claimed that the government was favouring Indian migrants, bringing them into the country to bolster Labor's vote. Obviously that was wrong. She sought to clarify and clear up the remarks, but refused to apologise. What followed over the past few days has been internal pressure from some Liberal colleagues to apologise. They've come out publicly and said that she should, in fact some did, on her behalf. Then there were also some internal grievances that spilled over very publicly and became quite messy. Susan Lee came out strongly saying the senator's comments were wrong, and she went into damage control along with some of her colleagues and held events with the Indian community who were understandably angry and hurt by the comments. But two things changed today when Senator Price held a press conference in Perth this afternoon. She doubled down and refused to apologise. And then when asked, she didn't endorse her leader. She refused to back Susan Lee. So then Susan Lee really had no choice but to act. Serving in my shadow ministry is a privilege and it is a requirement to have confidence in the leadership. Senator Jacinta Nampajimpa Price has failed the test of high standard that I have set for members of my shadow ministry. Despite being given the time and space to apologise, Senator Jacinta Nampajimpa Price did not offer an apology today. And many Australians, not just of Indian heritage, have been calling for that apology, for remarks that were deeply hurtful. The senator has released a statement. She said, I have accepted the leader's decision and I have reiterated my regret for not being clearer in my comments. The opposition leader would be hoping that this draws a line now under this saga which has damaged the Liberal's relationship with the Indian community, but has also done harm to the party overall. It's made the Liberals look ill-disciplined and has also undermined Susan Lee in the process because it's made her look like she can't hold the show together, but this evening she has put her foot down.
