Israeli forces are advancing their ground operation in Gaza City, aiming to target Hamas fighters and tunnel infrastructure. The offensive has progressed slowly, with only a small fraction of the estimated one million civilians in the area able or willing to evacuate, leading to mounting humanitarian concerns and accusations from some groups of genocide.

The Israeli government has dismissed recent statements from Hamas suggesting a comprehensive deal for the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. Domestic protests have intensified, with demonstrators urging Prime Minister Netanyahu's government to negotiate for the hostages' release. Despite these pressures, ceasefire talks remain stalled, as both sides hold firm on their conditions.

Israel advances with Gaza expansion as genocide accusations emerge

Israeli President Isaac Herzog met with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican this morning. This meeting comes as Israel looks to press ahead with plans to expand its offensive in Gaza after Benjamin Netanyahu's government dismissed as spin recent comments by the Hamas terror group claiming it was ready for a comprehensive deal that would see the release of all Israeli hostages in exchange for a number of Palestinian prisoners. So let's check now on that situation in the Middle East with CBS News contributor Robert Berker. He's in Jerusalem. Robert, good morning to you. So help us understand the latest on the ground offensive, the expanded ground offensive and the situation inside Gaza City. I understand some groups have qualified it as what Israel is doing, as genocide even. Well, Israel is tightening the news around Gaza City and this major operation, and it's going pretty slowly. They've taken the outskirts of the city, 60,000 reservists being called up, many of whom started reporting this week. And so the plan is to take the entire city. They say they want to target the tunnels there and also the last remnants of fighters of Hamas. The catch is that there are about a million Palestinians in that area, and they need to move them out in order to get to the tunnels, in order to get to the Hamas fighters. And that's going really slowly, because a lot of the Palestinians, perhaps most, don't want to leave. So far, 80,000 only out of a million have left, and the army is trying to force them out. But they say there's no place to go. They're worried about—they've already been displaced before, and now they fear that moving further south, they may not be able to get tents, they may not be able to get water. But Israel is moving ahead gradually with this offensive, which they say the aim is to defeat and destroy Hamas. It's the civilians being caught up in that, which is causing so much criticism toward the Israeli government. And some of that is coming from Israelis themselves. There were more demonstrations in the country calling on Netanyahu's government to obtain the release of the remaining hostages in Gaza. What is the real prospect of a deal now? Tell us more about those demonstrations. A lot of big demonstrations here in Jerusalem last night, which is a little bit of a change in tactics. Most of the major demonstrations have been taking place in Tel Aviv at a place called Hostage Square and around the defense ministry there. But they moved it up to Jerusalem last night and targeting the home of Prime Minister Netanyahu and some other ministers, saying they want the government to make a deal with Hamas to bring their loved ones home. We're talking about 20 living hostages and 48 altogether, including the bodies of dead hostages. They want a deal. They want the government to make a deal with Hamas. But so far, the government hasn't moved. As we mentioned, they're going ahead with the plan in Gaza City. The government says it's ready to end the war if Hamas meets its conditions, which is to lay down its arms and to release the hostages. Hamas says it won't disarm and it wants the Israeli army to pull out of Gaza. So the ceasefire talks remain at an impasse. All right, Robert Berger in Jerusalem for us with the latest on all of that.
