In recent days the US president has told demonstrators his administration would, quote, act accordingly in response to the Iranian government. But on Wednesday Trump appeared to soften his rhetoric and claimed that plans for executions in Iran have stopped. We've been told that the killing in Iran is stopping, it's stopped, it's stopping. And there's no plan for executions or an execution or executions. So I've been told that on good authority, we'll find out about it. I'm sure if it happens we'll all be very upset. Does this mean military action is now off the table against Iran? We're going to watch and see what the process is. Trump has yet to spell out what an American response to the Iranian crackdown would entail. Pentagon officials quoted by CBS News say he's been briefed on a number of plans, which include cyber, psychological and traditional warfare. According to a US official, the US has started evacuating hundreds of troops from the Al-Adeid airbase in Qatar, America's largest military base in the Middle East. An evacuation that may be a precautionary step, coming according to the Qatari government in response to the current regional tensions. Trump's remarks came the same day that Iran's Judiciary Chief said Tehran should push ahead with rapid trials and executions. If things are delayed, it's even possible that the same action we take today, we'd be taking two months later and it wouldn't have the same effect. Iranian authorities have been pushing back on the rhetoric out of Washington, saying it's a pretext for military intervention, to which they have claimed they are ready to retaliate.
