The European nations accused Iran of violating commitments made in a previous agreement, and recent restrictions on UN inspectors' access to nuclear sites contributed to the decision.

Iran's President Massoud Pazeshi-Khan condemned the sanctions as unfair and illegal, asserting that Iran would rely on regional partnerships to withstand the measures. In response, Tehran has recalled its ambassadors from the UK, France, and Germany, and officials have warned that Iran may end cooperation with international nuclear oversight bodies, raising concerns about future transparency.

A decade after they were lifted, the United Nations re-imposed their sweeping sanctions on Iran, right as the clock struck midnight in Tehran on Sunday. In the streets of the capital, locals were anxious about their already struggling economy. We are worried, yes, we are worried because our children's future is at risk. There is no rainwater, electricity and water keep getting cut off. And if sanctions come, there will be no medicine at all. Where are we supposed to get medicine from? Even now, when I go to get Iranian medicine, they tell me, ma'am, it's not available. It will have an impact. It's impossible for it not to. One way or another, we'll become isolated. The snapback was triggered by the UK, France and Germany after talks with Iran over its nuclear and missile programmes failed to result in an agreement. The three countries accused Iran of violating commitments it had made in a deal to remove sanctions ten years ago. UN inspectors have recently not been allowed to visit Iran's nuclear sites, and the fate of Iran's enriched uranium stockpile remains unclear. After Russia and China's last-minute resolution to delay the move failed to gather enough votes, Sunday's deadline was final. Iran's President Massoud Pazeshi-Khan condemned the move as unfair, unjust and illegal. Ultimately, it's not as if the sky will fall and we'll have to surrender if they go through with this. The reality is that with the measures we have in place, with the relationships we maintain with our neighbours, with the countries in Eurasia, BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, we will be able to overcome this situation. Tehran has now recalled its ambassadors to the UK, France and Germany. Iranian officials previously warned that if a snapback went ahead, Tehran would end its participation in IAEA inspections and would quit the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, putting an end to international scrutiny of its nuclear programme.
