Rescue teams who spent weeks searching for a dolphin calf tangled in nets off the NSW south coast have had success. Their efforts finally paying off after an interstate operation.

A dolphin calf that had been entangled in fishing gear for more than a month was successfully rescued at Mckenzies Beach, Malua Bay. The rescue operation involved SeaWorld crews who travelled from the Gold Coast to assist Parks and Wildlife and Orca teams in freeing the animal.

The fishing gear had wrapped from the dolphin's head to its tail, making the rescue delicate. The calf's mother remained nearby throughout the ordeal and was supportive during the intervention. After careful work, the rescuers freed the dolphin, allowing it to return to the ocean with its mother.

Dog tied from head to tail. This dolphin calf has had a tiresome journey until rescuers jumped at the opportunity to help. The baby bottlenose has spent more than a month wrapped in fishing gear. The first rescue attempt came up empty handed. But yesterday, SeaWorld crews travelled 14 hours from the Gold Coast to Mackenzie's beach near Batemans Bay to help the Parks and Wildlife team and Orca with the delicate mission. The entanglement started at the melon, which is up at the front near the head of the dolphin, and wrapped right down around its dorsal fin and around its tail fluke. The calf's mother was close in tow. We were worried that mum would be quite protective if we were to get hold of the calf, but fortunately she was pretty compliant. But it also worked to our advantage because we do know that that little one has been supported by its mother during this whole chapter of its entanglement. Finally, all of their hard work paid off. Alright, ready? Are you ready? Are you happy, Claire? I'm going for a little bit of a dip. One, two, three. The dolphin set free to take on the big blue with its mother. Yes, there they are, together. It was absolutely freezing out there today on the water, and the one thing we all commented was the sheer adrenaline and joy of getting the outcome that we got today.
