Instagram has announced it will implement restrict users under 18 to PG-13 content, after years of saying it wouldn't be possible. It comes as Australia's under-16s social media ban looms closer.

Instagram, which has around 14 million users in Australia, is introducing new restrictions for users under the age of 18. These changes, implemented by parent company Meta, will limit access to sexually suggestive content and sensitive topics, and introduce controls to prevent late-night messaging. The restrictions are set by default and can only be modified by parents.

The announcement coincides with the Australian government's plan to roll out a social media ban for those under 16. Despite claims from companies about the difficulty of enforcing such measures, officials argue that effective controls are possible. Some teenagers have reportedly discussed ways to bypass the restrictions, but experts warn these methods are unlikely to succeed. The proposed government ban will be discussed by education ministers and the eSafety Commissioner at an upcoming meeting.

Around 14 million Australians use Instagram and tonight its youngest users are facing restrictions following these new changes by parent company Meta. Essentially all users under the age of 18 are subject to these restrictions by default and can only be changed by their parents. The move will keep sexually suggestive content out of feeds and block sensitive topics from searches. So there are measures in place to potentially stop doom scrolling in the evenings there's some controls that prevent receiving messages whilst you admit to be sleeping. The announcement comes as the Albanese government prepares to roll out its own social media ban for under 16s from December 10. All of the claims by the companies that this is all too hard and won't work and they can't do anything is wrong. That they can, they just have chosen not to. But some Aussie teens are already sharing workarounds ahead of the deadline. Most of the bits of advice that I've seen circulating will not work they're setting kids up for failure. The government's social media ban will be discussed among state and territory education ministers along with the East Safety Commissioner at a meeting in Queensland on Friday.
