He was bold, controversial, and never backed down in the face of critics. Unlike his buildings, bending and twisting, limited only by gravity and his imagination. I'm always trying to express movement. These ideas are scary as hell to tell to the client. They can reject you, and they will. Frank Gehry's creative philosophy was never to know what you want as the end result, but find it along the way. This method yielded results he himself sometimes found hard to process, like his world-famous Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. In an interview with Vanity Fair magazine, Gehry said he looked at it and said, Oh my God, what have I done to these people? It took a couple of years for me to start to like it, actually. His critics have said his work lacked functionality and was too showy. His Disney concert hall in L.A. was described by some as a pile of broken crockery and a fortune cookie gone berserk. Gehry's response to criticism was brief. Frank Gehry was one of those architects who wanted to challenge traditional architecture defined by verticality, horizontality. At some point, people thought that these buildings were assaults on senses. Gehry has won every major prize in architecture, his biggest regret not being able to bring all of his ideas to fruition. I don't look back easily. I can't bring myself to look back, partly because there are a lot of those buildings that I really love that never got built.
