Hundreds of women dressed in pink joined nationwide anti-government protests in Indonesia's capital as authorities seeking to quell the unrest fired a police officer involved in the death of a bystander last week.

The demonstrations, led by students, workers, and rights groups, have spread across the country and intensified after the fatal incident involving a police vehicle.

The protests have resulted in several deaths and have at times escalated into looting and rioting, with security forces responding with tear gas and rubber bullets. President Prabowo Sabianto stated that the military and police would remain firm, suggesting that some of the unrest showed signs of terrorism and treason. The dismissed officer, one of seven in the vehicle, claimed he did not intend to kill anyone and is considering an appeal.

Several have died in the demonstrations, which have sparked some looting and rioting and have been met with tear gas and rubber bullets. President Prabowo Sabianto said the military and police would stand firm and that some of the unrest bore the signs of terrorism and treason. The fired officer, one of seven in the police vehicle that hit and killed a motorcycle driver, said he never intended to kill anyone and was only doing his job. He said he was considering an appeal.
