Senegal recently became a major headache for the International Monetary Fund (IMF), after the country uncovered billions of dollars of debt that were hidden by the previous administration. According to the IMF, Senegal's cooperation and efforts were however a reason for praise.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has acknowledged Senegal's recent initiatives to bolster its economy and address previously undisclosed debt. The current government revealed that the former administration had concealed $13 billion in debt, prompting Senegal to work closely with the IMF on amending its debt position.

An IMF staff team is scheduled to visit Dakar to discuss steps for resolving the misreporting case and to begin talks on a new IMF-supported program. The IMF is collaborating with Senegalese authorities to design corrective measures and strengthen capacity development. The discovery of the hidden debt has impacted Senegal's credit rating, but the country is now focused on recovery and restoring economic stability.

Encouraging words for Senegal. The International Monetary Fund has commented positively on Senegal's efforts to strengthen its economy. The country has been working with the IMF to amend its debt position after the current government uncovered that the previous administration had hidden 13 billion dollars of debt. What I can also share is that an IMF staff team will visit Dakar. The mission is tentatively planned for later in August. The purpose of the mission is going to be to discuss the steps needed to bring the misreporting case to our executive board. And we will also use the opportunity, the team will also use the opportunity, to initiate discussions on the contours of a new IMF-supported program for Senegal. We're also working closely with the authorities to design the corrective actions aimed at addressing the root causes of the misreporting, and of course to strengthen capacity development in Senegal. Senegal's economy has been rattled by the discovery of the underreported debt, which led to credit ratings agencies lowering the country's rating in recent weeks. Senegal is now attempting to resolve the situation and put in place a recovery plan.
