The International Criminal Court (ICC) on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant for two top Taliban leaders over their role in the Taliban's "persecution of Afghan girls and women".

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for Taliban Supreme Leader Habibullah Akhundzada and Abdul Hakeem Haqqani, President of the Supreme Court, citing crimes against humanity for their roles in the persecution of Afghan girls and women. The ICC alleges that the Taliban leadership has systematically deprived women and girls of fundamental rights, including access to education, freedom of movement, and expression, through a series of decrees and edicts since their return to power.

The Taliban responded by rejecting the ICC's authority, stating they do not recognise the organisation or its rulings. The ICC, which relies on member states to enforce its warrants, faces significant challenges in carrying out the arrests, as it does not have its own police force.

Women in Afghanistan are one of the most oppressed groups in the world. They are denied access to secondary education, parks and gyms. Women must often be accompanied by male guardians when outside the home. The Taliban even banned them from raising their voices in public. Since the group returned to power in 2021, women are being erased from society. In response, the International Criminal Court has issued arrest warrants for crimes against humanity against two Taliban leaders. The Supreme Leader Habibullah Akhundzada on the left and Abdul Hakeem Haqqani, President of the Supreme Court. They are held criminally responsible for the persecution of Afghan girls and women. While the Taliban have imposed certain rules and prohibitions on the entire population, they have specifically targeted girls and women because of their gender, depriving them of their fundamental rights and freedoms. Specifically through decrees and edicts, the Taliban have severely deprived girls and women of their rights to education, private and family life, as well as their freedoms of movement, expression, thought, conscience and religion. The ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan requested the arrest warrants last January. My office has concluded that these two Afghan nationals are criminally responsible for persecuting Afghan girls and women. The Taliban issued a statement blasting the organisation in search that it does not recognise its authority. Such nonsense announcements won't affect the strong commitment and dedication to Sharia. We do not recognise any organisation called the International Court, nor are we committed to it in any way. It is unlikely the arrests will be carried out. The ICC does not have its own police force and so relies on member states to carry out any arrests.

Protests broke out in Chicago on Saturday against President Trump's immigration crackdown. A group of Catholic clergy led what they called a "People's Mass" outside the Great Lakes Naval Base. The base will also be used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement as a staging area for deportations.
