AccuWeather meteorologists have highlighted that hurricane season does not conclude with the end of summer, and the Gulf Coast and Southeast United States remain at significant risk as the season moves into fall. While the season has so far been relatively quiet, with only a few minor tropical systems and no direct hits on the U.S., experts warn that the situation could change quickly in the coming weeks.

Long-range forecasts continue to focus on the Gulf Coast as the primary area of concern, based on historical patterns. AccuWeather urges residents not to let their guard down and to remain prepared, as the potential for increased tropical activity persists through the remainder of the season.

Hurricane season moving into the fall season

Welcome back to AccuWeather Ahead. With the unofficial sad end of summertime nearing this weekend, AccuWeather experts are reminding everyone that hurricane season does not end with summer, and the Gulf Coast and Southeast remain at full risk as we head into the fall. And as part of AccuWeather's exclusive fall forecast, meteorologist Tony Laubeck joins us live from Denver, Colorado, to explain why the tropics are still a big concern. So what's on your mind, Tony? Well, one of the things I will say that is on my mind, and it's probably on a lot of people's minds as we head into the Labor Day weekend, is how nice it's got to be right now for us to be talking about hurricanes of the past as opposed to dealing with anything in the present. It has been a slow start for us here, with the exception of Aaron just recently. It's been pretty quiet other than a few little tropical systems early on, but we really haven't been dealing with a whole lot in the way of tropical activity, certainly no direct hits on the United States. And while we all cross our fingers that that's going to remain the case, unfortunately it's probably unlikely that we're going to see anything like that as we head into the rest of the, well, I guess the last week of summer, we probably will, or last few weeks of summer, we might see some of that here. I'm thinking meteorological summer ending, which happens here in a few days. But we are talking about whether or not that tropical activity is going to be an issue for us later. AccuWeather lead long-range forecaster Paul Pastelok has his thoughts on that. There's no changes in the tropical outlook right now. We still feel the forecast is looking good. We're still concerned about the Gulf Coast and the Southeast. These are, when we looked at 12 years, 12 analog years, the bulk of the storm seemed to be in that general region. Not a whole lot coming up the East Coast, not out of the question, still got to be prepared. But mostly along the Gulf Coast. And that is going to be the area of focus for our long-range forecasters as we head over the next month, month and a half for sure. So certainly don't let your guard down by any stretch of the imagination and enjoy the quiet time. We don't, we certainly, nobody's going to be arguing with the fact that we've been kind of not having much of a season to this point. That's always a good thing. So hopefully, like I said, we've got our fingers crossed, guys, that we can maintain some of that quiet here. But unfortunately, as we get a little bit further into the September months, that may change pretty drastically and may do so pretty quickly. Yeah, we have a long way ahead of us still, a long road.
