Meteorologists are tracking two hurricanes in the Pacific that will have U.S. impacts over the coming week.

Hawaii

Hurricane Kiko has intensified, reaching maximum sustained winds of 130 miles per hour and is forecast to approach Hawaii, though it is expected to weaken as it crosses cooler waters. The storm may bring heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and a moderate risk of flash flooding and power outages, particularly on the east-facing sides of Hawaii's islands.

Meanwhile, Hurricane Lorena, currently a category one hurricane, is moving northwest toward the Baja California Peninsula. It is expected to make landfall as a tropical storm, bringing a storm surge of up to three feet, heavy rain, and strong wind gusts. Rainfall from Lorena may also affect southern New Mexico and parts of the southern plains in the United States.

Let's take you to the tropics with that theme of, again, some derelict vessels and boats that may not be fully accounted for or properly moored. Overall, we're going to have some agitated surf and some big coastal hazards on the Pacific side more than the Atlantic in the short term, at least near land masses. We have Lorena and Kiko. And earlier I was talking about Kiko approaching category three intensity. And we had the earlier numbers, but now the new numbers are in again. This is Hawaii standard time, 11 a.m. Hawaii standard time is 5 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. And we saw a 20 mile per hour increase in max sustained wind. So this jumped in a big way from 110 to 130 mile per hour max sustained winds. And you can see this storm is very symmetrical. It's moving west at nine miles per hour. Our forward motion, it's increased by three miles per hour in terms of its forward speed compared to yesterday. And we're expecting this to be, again, a category four hurricane for a time. And again, holding on to category three intensity. Now, when storms approach Hawaii, if they come in from the east, they inevitably cross slightly cooler water. And that's why we're going to see this go from a cat four to a three to a two to a one to a tropical storm before any potential landfall over the Hawaiian Islands. And it remains to be seen if we'll see a true landfall. We're still looking a week out into the future before this will make its way into Hawaii, Tuesday into Wednesday. Regardless, we're expecting the east facing sides of the mountains and the islands to face some of the heaviest rain, four to eight inches of rain on the northeast side of the Big Island and other parts of the other central islands of Hawaii as well. Gusts of wind 40 to 60 miles per hour. Remember, we're going to be dealing with some cooler water degrading the intensity of the storm. So the winds will be backing off a bit, but there will still be a lot of dangers out there. And we're looking at moderate risk here for flash flooding, mudslides and some power outages as well. So that is the story with Kiko as we take you to Lorena. Lorena also has a big story ahead of it. This is a category one hurricane. Also, the newer numbers, 5 p.m. Eastern, that's two Pacific. And this is making a push northwestward at 15 miles per hour. Big difference in water temperature if you're inside the Baja California Peninsula, the Gulf of California versus the outer water. But it's still warm enough to sustain this storm for a time. There will be some loss of wind energy before a likely landfall at 11 a.m. Friday as a tropical storm. This is going to bring a storm surge of one to two feet, one to three feet for some in parts of the Baja California Sur Peninsula and also heavy rain. Some of that's going to move into southern New Mexico and ultimately into parts of the southern plains of the U.S. as well. Some wind near the point of landfall of 60 to 80 mile per hour gusts.
