A hurricane warning is in effect for Bermuda as Hurricane Imelda will pass very close to the islands this evening. Hurricane-force winds, flooding rain and extremely dangerous surf conditions are all expected later today and into the overnight hours as Imelda moves through.

Hurricane Imelda, a category 2 storm, is moving closer to Bermuda and is expected to bring strong winds and significant impacts. The hurricane is transitioning into an extra-tropical system, which may expand the area affected by damaging winds even if the eye wall does not directly hit Bermuda. 

High surf and dangerous rip currents are being reported along the US East Coast, from Boston to Southern Florida, as a result of the storm's influence. Meanwhile, high pressure is keeping conditions dry further inland from the Great Lakes through Appalachia.

Hurricane Imelda to strike Bermuda this evening

Umberto, you know, certainly created some nasty conditions over the past day and a half over Bermuda, and now you've got Imelda, which is coming a lot closer. It is a hurricane, but what's interesting is it's going to be transitioning as a Cat 2 hurricane into what we call extra tropical. So that's not a good thing, because even with a miss of the eye wall to Bermuda, which may not happen anyway, you're going to get the winds. You're going to get the winds as they start to, you know, expand out. And so very strong, very high impacts expected tonight during the overnight hours. Meanwhile, high pressure continues to build down in the east to keep things dry as a bone from the Great Lakes down through Appalachia. So the problem is too, is for us, like we've been talking about, especially once we knew this thing was going out, it's all about, and I did this the other day, Steph did it at Myrtle Beach. I did it Folly Beach in South Carolina, where we're talking about beach issues. High surf, you saw the surf yesterday in the Outer Banks and what it did, but you've got big waves out through there, rolling in at sets, time of high tide, rip currents just about as far as the eye can see from the North Shore of Boston all the way down into Southern Florida here.
