Hungary has announced the date for its upcoming parliamentary election, with the campaign officially starting on February 21. Recent polling by Politico shows the opposition Tisza party, led by Péter Modyar, ahead of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's ruling Fidesz party by 12 percentage points.

Modyar, a former government insider, represents the first significant challenge to Orbán in 16 years. The election comes amid criticism of Orbán's government from EU members over democratic backsliding, LGBTQ rights, and press freedom, as well as economic stagnation and Hungary's continued close ties with Russia.
