Meanwhile, firefighters made their way through the burned-out apartments, in search of the hundreds of residents still missing, and feared dead. Residents now face the horrific task of identifying their loved ones. At this community centre, police displayed photos of the deceased and their personal items, to help identify them. A fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon, inside the eight-building complex, with some 2,000 apartment units. It swept across bamboo scaffolding, surrounding several blocks, where maintenance work was underway. Residents who managed to get out in time, look at their former homes, in disbelief. They are safe, but shocked. How do I feel now? I even feel like dying. Seeing it like this, and being unable to help, what can we do? The city's residents have stepped up to assist the survivors, bringing food, clothing and blankets. Hong Kong people are very resilient and full of love, and as soon as this happened, many people in districts appealed for supplies to be brought here. When I saw this disaster, I thought it was tragic, so I felt I had to help out and give as much back as I can, and to help as many people as I can. Hong Kong people must be united. The catastrophic blaze is now triggering major questions. According to officials, some building materials might not have complied with fire safety regulations. And police have arrested three construction company executives, on suspicion of negligent manslaughter. Authorities say they will speed up the full transition from bamboo to metal scaffolding.
