The analysis suggests that the extreme fire weather conditions in January are approximately 35% more likely to occur in today's climate compared to previous years. These conditions were intensified by climate change-related factors such as increased heat and dryness, which turned vegetation into ready fuel, exacerbated by heavy winds spreading the fires to unusual areas.

Residents in California are dealing with the aftermath of these destructive fires, which have led to insured losses estimated at over $30 billion. This has also triggered a surge in insurance premiums, as many insurers are either increasing rates, refusing to renew existing policies, or writing new ones. Experts believe this could lead to a financial ripple effect, with some individuals defaulting on their mortgages not only in California but also in other parts of the United States due to escalating insurance costs.

In response to the increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires, one California bill proposes that insurers and homeowners be allowed to sue oil and gas companies. The bill's proponents argue that these companies need to partake in the financial responsibility as their fossil fuel emissions contribute to climate change. However, the oil and gas industry dismissed the proposal as theatrics and scapegoating. Experts warn that without action, the pathway to an uninsurable future becomes more likely, raising concerns about who will bear the financial burdens of such disasters.

With insured losses of these fires estimated at more than 30 billion dollars premiums are likely to spike for everyone triggering a potential domino effect. We're starting to see some evidence that folks are defaulting on their mortgage not just in California but elsewhere in the United States as these insurance prices go up. We are all paying for these disasters but there is one stakeholder that is not paying. One California bill introduced this week seeks to let insurers and homeowners sue oil and gas companies as the burning of fossil fuels continues to drive global heating. The industry called it theatrics and scapegoating. But with the science pointing to a more uninsurable future experts say the money has to come from somewhere. Anand Ram, CBC News, Toronto.
