I need something big, I need something new. What do you think? You don't want to be a Neil Diamond impersonator, you want to be a Neil Diamond interpreter. I was looking for the right way to say it and you just came right out and said it. Why a karaoke bar became so integral to certain big moments in the movie? Because it's relatable. More people can relate, I think, to being in a bar singing a song with your friends being happy, but you can also relate being absolutely miserable and lost, you know? I think that that's much more emotionally relatable and you have a connection to that than you necessarily would seeing somebody that's like a pop star on a stage. And really that, for me, was the goal of the movie, is how do you take normal people, simple, everyday Americans, and give an epic, cinematic retelling of these moments in their lives? Hugh, I know you've had moments in your life tied to karaoke that were very profound for you. I've had two. You've had profound karaoke? I've had two epic karaoke. Why did I have to hear this? Well, the last one, the most recent, was karaoke with Neil Diamond at his house and he had the most awesome little karaoke machine that I've now bought that is in my house. Oh, yes, of course. And I actually can see myself doing karaoke on my own. Wait, so you're doing karaoke with Neil Diamond. Is that intimidating? Because it's a fun time, sure, but also he's Neil Diamond. Yeah, you lay way back. That's what happens. You just make sure you can always be hearing Neil Diamond and not yourself. I would have loved to have heard his voice do I Dreamed a Dream. Like, what if that must have been amazing? It's incredible because he started to sing I Dreamed a Dream and I'm like, that's a song, like, that's got a range in it. And nailed it. And it was almost like, of course. I said, why did you sing that song, Neil? And he goes, it's such a pretty tune. Such a pretty tune. And it was just so cool. Do you have a go-to karaoke song? I don't. I don't. I mean, we do now. ♪ Sweet Caroline, wah-wah. ♪ Is it Sweet Caroline now? I mean, now, or soon? We've got like an hour's worth. You're right, you're right. It's all we do. We're literally going on a pub tour of the world. We're turning into who we were in the movie, which is like, you know, he has other songs. 20 years ago, I did karaoke with John Travolta. We were promoting Swordfish and we found ourselves in a karaoke thing and someone just put on Summer Lovin' from Grease and a microphone was put in my hand and in his. Of course he played Danny and being Australian, I played Sandy. That's so fun. It was so much fun. I want to do karaoke with John Travolta. You know, actually, I'm taking too much time. That's like a dream. You're fine. But you'll love this story. We were doing a night shoot. It was, we were on a process. So we're in a car, just John and I, but we're on a flatbed. So the crew are all hanging out. It was four in the morning going around the streets of LA. And we just, all right, everyone, we're going to drive back to the start. So it's at three, but no one's got any personality at three in the morning. And one of the crew just started going, wella, wella, wella, mm. That was it. And by the end, all of us, tell me more, tell me more, and John Travolta in the car. I will never forget it. That's the best. I owe that. Wella, wella, wella. That's the best. Okay, so I have two songs that I usually just go to with karaoke and it has nothing to do with me promoting this movie, but Forever in Blue Jeans is a perfect register for a guy to sing at a karaoke bar. There's not any notes that are so unbelievably high. It starts off at a very nice, even register in the middle of it. And it's something that also like everybody at a certain point can chime in with the chorus. Now, if I'm singing with a woman on stage, I like doing R.E.M.'s Shiny Happy People. Yeah. Oh, good. Yeah, because it's just a perfect way that you can kind of go to the woman next to you. Yeah. Those are my two. What about you, karaoke? Do you have any epic karaokes? No, no, I can't. Who can beat that? Like you karaoke, you karaoke with like the karaoke, like the karaoke song of all time. You did sing when you were 15 for Quincy Jones at a dinner party at your house. But that's different. That's different. That's like, that's like, you know. That's as epic as it gets. That's as scary as it gets. I bet, right. I was like, no, don't make me sing. I was like, wait, what is that? Oh, that Christopher, yeah, Christopher, don't make me sing. Don't make me sing, Bill Bailey. Don't make me sing. You don't have to. I don't know what that character is called, but it's very much like being a theater kid. I love it. I, yeah, I love that. That's like, that's, that's my life. No, no, please, don't make me sing.
