You can place leak detectors near those vulnerable pipes. Water heaters are under sinks, which can alert you the moment moisture is detected. Then you can use some smart water shutoff valves, which can automatically cut off the water supply if a leak is detected, which will minimize the damage. And then you can also point indoor cameras at utility areas like basements, and those will let you visually check for issues if you're traveling. You can also have human backup. Ask a trusted friend, neighbor, or family member to stop by periodically if you'll be gone for an extended period of time. They can check for cold spots, make sure the heat is running, and look for early signs of leaks or frost buildup. If you'll be away for a long stretch, consider turning off the main water supply entirely. It won't prevent freezing, but it will prevent catastrophic flooding if something does burst.
