Colorado residents have new options for accessing solar energy without the need for rooftop panels. Through programs like Neighborhood Sun, customers of Excel Energy can sign up to participate in community solar farms. This allows participants to receive solar credits, which can reduce electricity bills by 10 to 25 percent.

These programs are particularly beneficial for renters, condo dwellers, and those in properties where rooftop panels are not feasible. Currently, 25 solar farms are operational, with additional projects expected to launch. Excel Energy supports these initiatives, though they are managed by third-party organizations, and provides information about similar programs online.

How Coloradans can access solar energy without rooftop panels

We talk a lot about using solar energy as a clean energy source, but it's not always easy to set up or easy to afford, so I started hearing about a group called Neighborhood Sun, where instead of installing and paying for solar panels, Excel customers can sign up to participate in solar farms to get solar credits and that could in turn get you anywhere from a 10 to 25% off of your electricity bill. So a lot of folks who either don't own their home, they might be renters. You know they might be in a condo. They might be in affordable housing. They might be in a historic property that doesn't allow rooftop panels on the top. We have such a wide range of reasons that people might choose community solar over rooftop because they can't access rooftop. So the group says that with the help of Excel, they're figuring out how much energy a person needs and then they're assigning them the appropriate panels. And there is definitely a weight involved here, though. 25 farms are up and running. Seven more are expected to come online by the end of the year, but Excel customers in Colorado. You can still sign up for this now. I touched base with Excel as well, and a spokesperson said they do support the project. They just want to remind you it's through a third party. They also have a list of a bunch of different organizations online that are working on similar projects here in Colorado.
