CNBC's Julia Boorstin goes inside a popular San Francisco restaurant to show how it's capitalizing on new AI startups to streamline daily tasks and looks at how OpenTable is reshaping the industry for both restaurants and diners on the platform.

The release of Open AI's ChatGPT has accelerated the development of artificial intelligence and warnings about its impact on society.

Rise of AI

Restaurants are increasingly integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into their operations to address staffing challenges and improve efficiency. At Wayfair Tavern in San Francisco, AI tools from startups like Panzo, Superhuman, and Hostie are automating tasks such as email responses and phone reservations, allowing staff to focus more on hospitality and face-to-face guest interactions. The adoption of these technologies has led to faster response times, increased event bookings, and higher sales.

Platforms like OpenTable, used by thousands of restaurants, are investing in AI to streamline reservations and customer service. OpenTable's partnerships with companies such as Salesforce, OpenAI, and Perplexity have resulted in AI-powered chatbots that handle the majority of customer queries, improving response times and customer satisfaction. New features, such as AI concierges and integration with ChatGPT, further enhance the dining experience by providing quick answers to diners' questions and seamless reservation capabilities.

How AI is transforming restaurants

Well, Melissa, we have a packet staffed. Restaurants are turning to AI to help. One of those restaurants is Wayfair Tavern in San Francisco, so the AI really helps it does work as an assistant. It's really intuitive and it gets back to the little things that just like bog you down day to day. Andrea Boyd is Wayfair's director of sales and events. She recently began using AI tools from startups Panzo and Superhuman. To help streamline daily tasks like email responses before, it would have had to be me and maybe two other people doing that work. Now I can really focus my staff on like hospitality and you know, being in the room with the guest and and being more face to face. Wayfair is even using an AI voice chat bot from startup Hostie to help answer phones for about $200 per month. It's now handling around 100,000 reservations over the phone, freeing up hosts to focus on things that need a human touch. And with the help of AI, the restaurant is busier than ever because I can get back to people quicker and because I my response time is faster. We book more events. We have more sales. We have more guests coming in the door. Wayfair is also using open table. It's one of the 60,000 restaurants using it for reservations and reviews. The subsidiary of booking holdings is investing in artificial intelligence to help people with artificial intelligence. To help both restaurants and the millions of diners who use the platform. If AI is implemented correctly, it's in the background. Guests don't see it. Guests don't notice it right. It allows restaurant workers to have more meaningful interactions with their guests. Open table is partnered with Salesforce's agent force, which created chat bots for both restaurants and diners, saying 3 quarters of restaurants queries are solved by AI. Consumer sentiment has been really positive because we're able to respond to their question very quickly, and we're able to actually solve their issue with agent for so that they're not getting transferred to a human. The bot can actually solve what they're asking it to solve. The company also striking deals with open AI and perplexity, saying these partnerships make its products stickier and reduce churn. We're also seeing more of these AI tools for consumers. Open table also launched an AI concierge to enable diners to ask some of their diners to ask specific questions about restaurants like whether. Pets are allowed or what some suggested items are to order from the menu, and open tables also integrated into chat GPT's operator AI agent so customers can seamlessly book through on open table when they're using that chat that chat bot Melissa. So a company like Open Table Julie, you mentioned partnerships with perplexity and and chat GPT and I'm wondering if you know do they pay? Is this free? Is this sort of an experiment? At what stage of commercialization is this? Well, remember, you know, companies like perplexity as well as open AI. They have these huge enterprise businesses and open table and I have to be careful your open table open AI. Open table would be a customer of those enterprise tools. But what's interesting to me here specifically about open AI and open table is that it really can work. Both ways, it's a good thing and an advantage for open AI to be able to seamlessly book through open table. So that's a situation where you really see this being advantageous for both companies, but I would say certainly open tables an example of an enterprise deal with these these AI companies.
