More than 22 months since Hamas launched its deadly attack on southern Israel, the Islamist militant group still hold 50 hostages in Gaza, 7 of whom have German citizenship. Frustration is mounting among their families, with many accusing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of failing them.

Efrat Machikawa, whose family members were among those taken hostage by Hamas, has spoken out about the ongoing suffering experienced by both Israelis and Palestinians. She emphasised that true recovery cannot begin until all remaining hostages are released and the conflict comes to an end.

Machikawa expressed frustration with the current efforts to free the hostages and called for greater international involvement, including from Germany and the United States. She urged for a ceasefire and highlighted the need for an international coalition to address the humanitarian crisis and restore hope to the region.

Right. Efrat Machikawa joins me now from southern Israel. Five of her family members were at one point being held by Hamas. Hello and welcome, Efrat. How are your family members doing? It's difficult. No one in Israel will be on stage of recovery unless the whole 50 hostages will be home and we will see the end of the catastrophe around us and recovery will be starting. No one is complete. We are all in terrible sorrow of seeing what happened. I remind you that on October 7th, 250 hostages were taken from their beds and now there are still 50 and all the selection and the ongoing war and the terrible situation in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis everywhere and Hamas still holding and still terrorizing not only Israel, but also the Palestinians. It's hard, but we're not giving hope. We're not giving up to hope. We are looking forward a ceasefire and end to this terrible war and the return of all 50 hostages at once, maybe not on the same day, but at once, no selection and bringing hope to our Mediterranean region. Right, right. I mean, as you say, 50 hostages still remain with Hamas and it must be frustrating, I should say, right? Israelis in our report are not happy with the efforts of the Netanyahu government to free them. What are your thoughts on how it's been going so far? I belong to the 85% of the Israelis who say, we are not our government. We want this end to war, this war to end. And we know that the release of the hostages will do that. It has to stop. There have been too much suffering. There is no end to this cycle of violence. I think that it is upon the international community and we thank President Trump for leading it to call for end of the war and the return of all hostages home so people will be able to return to respectful life, to respectful conditions, to some kind of a resilience that will grow in order for us to go back to normal life. But you know that as long as Hamas is terrorizing the Middle East, Gaza and Israel, we are in danger. This Islamic extremist is actually hurting their own people, including ours, no matter whether we are Jews or Muslim or Druze or Kurdish, it doesn't matter. So we have to be very, very careful in describing the situation. The terror has to end and the suffering both of the Palestinians themselves and ours must end. It is a catastrophe. It's heartbreaking to see what's happening. You are a cultural diplomacy specialist. You just returned from a trip to Germany with other hostage family members. Yes. So it really begs the question, what do you make of Germany's role in helping with the return of hostages and end the war in Gaza? I think that we want to thank Germany for everything they did until now, but we are on a critical point and this is why we went. We want all Germans to know there are still seven German citizens held by Hamas in the Gaza Strip. So we asked the German government to talk more, to explain, to show the catastrophe and to take responsibility in making sure that the German hostages are coming back out of Gaza, but not all of them, because we are not talking about selection. We think Germany is taking responsibility and doing, they could do more. We would like more leaders to announce that publicly. And we want Germany to push the countries they know they can push. We need an international coalition to end this humanitarian catastrophe. And we're there with Germany, with the rest of the world and with the United States calling, stop the war, bring the hostages back, bring hope to the Middle East. Palestinians and Israelis as well.
