An internal review is underway at Caboolture Hospital after it was found that thousands of urgent care patients may not have had their scans examined.

Caboolture Hospital in Queensland is reviewing its specialist outpatient department after discovering that up to 9,000 patient scans dating back to April 2023 may not have been examined. The issue affects medical imaging for surgical, cardiac, respiratory, and pediatric patients and stems from a change in the way hard copy scans were delivered to doctors.

The problem came to light when a patient presented to emergency with advanced cancer, which had been detected in an outpatient scan five weeks earlier but was not reviewed in time. Hospital officials have apologized and stated that the issue has been addressed. There is currently no indication that other departments or hospitals are affected.

Earlier this month a patient came to emergency with undiagnosed advanced cancer, but an unread outpatient scan five weeks earlier did find it. It meant palliative care could have been provided a month earlier. Absolutely, I do apologize. This is not okay. This is not okay for our system and we've immediately addressed it. How could this have happened and we didn't know. There is no indication yet any other department or hospital is impacted.
