After a scuffle during the Seattle Sounders and Inter Miami match over the weekend, some fans were captured on video in a full on brawl post-match outside Lumen Field.

The incident began with a confrontation involving a Miami player spitting at a Sounders coach and escalated into a street brawl between rival fans, with objects such as traffic cones and trash cans being thrown.

The unusual level of hooliganism has prompted concerns about security as Seattle prepares to host World Cup matches. Authorities, including former Seattle police chief John Diaz, are working with federal agencies and neighboring jurisdictions to develop comprehensive security plans, anticipating large crowds and potential cross-border issues with nearby Vancouver.

Over the weekend, the Sounders big win over Inter Miami in the League Cup was overshadowed by a series of wild events. Miami's star was caught on camera spitting in the face of a Sounders coach. Players got testy out on the pitch, teammates at times literally holding them back. But as FOX 13's Lauren Donovan is here to explain, it didn't end there. Yeah, oh boy, David. It most certainly did not. So the tension you saw out there on the field in that video actually spilled out onto the streets of Seattle. We're talking Occidental Avenue becoming the scene of a brawl between Inter Miami fans and Sounders fans. We've got the messy fanatics there in the mix as well. And I'm not even kidding. Video from this brawl shows folks throwing traffic cones at each other, trash cans, whipping each other with jackets. The punches were thrown. It was so chaotic out here and what we saw that violence that's really unlike anything we tend to see here in Seattle when it just comes to sports. And we've got a lot of sports teams. I think that's fair to say. So it's very unusual, very strange. Now folks online on Reddit, they're giving their two cents on that. I pulled some comments from it. One person said quote, American football hooliganism is pretty much unheard of, right? Is this the start of America truly embracing the sport? Another one. True football culture. They're learning. So seeing that reading those comments drew me to the question is what we're seeing over the weekend a sign of what is to come when the World Cup arrives in Seattle. We're talking about 750,000 frenzied football fans coming to our city more than the entire population of the city alone. Uh, staggering numbers. And I just have this question today. I'm looking for answers. It's pretty wild and you just saw the video as well. What do you think? Well, Lauren, SPD is already stretched thin so they can't handle this on their own. FIFA has brought in a former Seattle police chief John Diaz. He's been working for the last two years as a chief security officer trying to get up to speed to try to deal with this. What's he saying about this and the preparations tonight? Yeah. And so Diaz, you know, he isn't just anyone. As you mentioned, David, former chief of police. FIFA didn't just parachute some expert and he knows our area like the back of his hand. He served our city for 30 years. Three of those. He was the top dog, the chief. Um, and so he's really familiar with our region right now. He says he's working with 16 host cities, Department of Homeland Security and local law enforcement agencies to hatch plans. And he shared that the feds are stepping in to provide help just because of the magnitude of this event like they would for the Super Bowl. But they're also going to boost numbers statewide mutual aid. So it'll be more than just SPD King County Sheriff's Office. They're going to pull from other departments. Um, and we know private security will be enlisted as well. Uh, David, what is coming to Seattle is unlike anything we've ever seen bigger, longer, more international. Just looking back in the history books, the World's Fair, the Goodwill Games in the nineties, perhaps even the mob that was the Super Bowl parade back in 2014. They just don't compare. We are essentially preparing for the scale of six matches, six different Super Bowls next summer. As we get closer to the games, which countries are coming? What to expect from those countries? How could we, uh, interact with the fan bases? And Diaz, who you just heard from their shared, he's especially working closely with our Canadian neighbors to the north in Vancouver, outlining protocol and planning for worst case scenarios. There's gonna be a lot of traffic back and forth along the I five corridor and the borders there. So we're gonna continue to track the story.
