HMAS Farncomb's crew of about 80 is spending a week in Melbourne. The electric-powered submarine is at the tail end of a seven-day stay and preparing to dive again.

The HMAS Farncombe, one of Australia's Collins-class submarines, recently docked at Station Pier in Melbourne, marking a rare visit for the city. The submarine, staffed by around 60 crew members working in shifts, demonstrates the complexity and readiness of Australia's subsea defense assets. The Collins-class fleet has been operational for over two decades and has faced maintenance issues over its lifespan. To ensure continued service, the submarines are scheduled for life-extending upgrades that will keep them operational into the 2040s. Australia currently operates six Collins-class submarines, with plans to replace them with nuclear-powered vessels under the AUKUS agreement, pending ongoing reviews and commitments from the United States.

Scoping out one of our most complex defence assets, this is the front line of our subsea fighting force. From the second you climb on board HMAS Farncombe, there's only one way to describe it. Around 60 crew cram in, working two different shifts in a perpetual state of readiness. So this is action station? This is action station. So everyone's got their own spot at action station. A well-oiled team running a diesel electric attack machine. Normally here we've got the torpedo gears. We can check things like our bilge tanks and see how much we've got in every tank. This is our hydraulics network here. The crew keeps track of friend, foe and anything else beneath the ocean's surface through acoustic monitoring. Every submarine, every vessel, every source in the ocean is going to make some sort of noise. The technology that's involved with this periscope is classified. We can't film it from up the top, but we can give you a look from in here. Tell you what, that view of the city skyline is pretty nice. With the HMAS Farncombe docking at Station Pier, Melbourne's only visit so far this year from one of our Collins-class subs. This is quite rare for Melbourne. Our fleet's been operational for more than 20 years now. The vessels have had maintenance issues over their lifespan. They're about to undergo life-extending upgrades to keep them running into the 2040s. Australia has six of these Collins-class submarines. The plan is to replace them with nuclear subs as part of the AUKUS agreement from 2032, provided America stays committed to the deal. It's currently reviewing AUKUS, questioning if it's in the United States' national interest. Rory Campbell, 10 News.
