Justin Lin has been announced as the director for the film adaptation of the Helldivers franchise, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Lin, recognized for his work on multiple Fast and Furious films and Star Trek Beyond, will work alongside writer Gary Dauberman, known for his contributions to the Annabelle and It film series.

The Helldivers movie was announced at Sony's CES 2025 press conference, following the commercial success of Helldivers 2, which sold over 12 million copies in its first 12 weeks. The project is being produced by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, and draws inspiration from the 1997 sci-fi film Starship Troopers, a franchise also owned by Sony.

This is your Daily Fix. Justin Lin is set to direct the upcoming film adaptation of the Helldivers franchise, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Lin is best known for his work on a number of Fast and Furious movies, and was the director of the series from the Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift in 2006 until Fast and Furious 6 in 2013. It won't mark the first time Lin has set his sights on outer space, as he also directed Star Trek Beyond in 2016, and later returned to the Fast and Furious series to direct 2021's F9, in which he sent Ludacris and Tyrese Gibson into literal orbit in a 1984 Pontiac Fiero. The Helldivers movie has been written by Gary Dauberman, the writer of several Annabelle films and The Nun, as well as the co-writer of 2017's It and the writer of its 2019 sequel, It Chapter 2. Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions' Helldivers movie was announced early this year at Sony's CES 2025 press conference. The project comes in the wake of the immense success of Arrowhead's Helldivers 2, which became PlayStation's fastest-selling game of all time following its launch in February 2024, selling over 12 million copies in its first 12 weeks on sale. Helldivers is heavily inspired by Paul Verhoeven's vision for a 1997 sci-fi cult classic Starship Troopers, so it's funny that Sony Pictures is making the movie because it also owns the Starship Troopers movie franchise. Speaking of, Helldivers 2 developer Arrowhead has created a slim version of its explosive co-op third-person shooter that massively reduces its file size on PC. For some time now, PC gamers have complained about Helldivers 2's bloated installation size, and Arrowhead recently outlined plans to bring it closer to the size of the console version. In a post on Steam, Arrowhead said it had worked with Sony-owned PC port specialist Nixxes to reach its goal sooner than expected, reducing the PC installation size from 154 gigs to 23 gigs, for a total savings of 133 gigs, or 85%. Arrowhead has now rolled out this slim version of Helldivers 2 as part of a public technical beta which PC players are free to opt into. Arrowhead explained, Our testing shows that for the small percentage of players still using mechanical hard disk drives, mission loading times have only increased by a few seconds in the worst cases. Once the beta confirms no issues, Arrowhead will roll out the slim version of Helldivers 2 to all players and make it the default version for everyone. Assuming all goes smoothly, the legacy version will be discontinued sometime next year. And finally today, Microsoft has announced the Xbox Game Pass December lineup, which is headlined by NetherRealm's gory fighting game Mortal Kombat 1. Also coming to Game Pass in the coming weeks as Day 1 launches are First Person Sci-Fi Horror Routine and Souls-like Deck Builder Death Howl. Available today, December 2nd is Lost Records Bloom and Rage, tomorrow, December 3rd, sees Monster Train 2 and Spray Paint Simulator both hit Game Pass Premium. Monster Train 2 is my Game of the Year, by the way. December 4th is a decent day for Game Pass, with 33 Immortals and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle both being added to Game Pass Premium. The aforementioned Routine launches Day 1. Moving on to December 9th, a game about digging a hole arrives on all tiers, as does Domekeeper. Death Howl for handheld and PC is a Day 1 Ultimate and PC release, also on the 9th. Here's a big one, Mortal Kombat 1 arrives on all tiers on December 10th. A day later, something that couldn't be more different arrives, Bratz Rhythm and Style. December already got off to a big start on Game Pass, with yesterday's launch of retro beat-em-up Marvel Cosmic Invasion as a Day 1 release. Meanwhile, on December 3rd, three more games hit Essential, Stellaris, World War Z Aftermath and Medieval Dynasty. Microsoft's post on Xbox Wire suggests this is the entire lineup for December 2025, but it only takes us to December 11th. It reads, We hope you have a chill rest of your December.
