A coastal storm led to severe conditions from the Outer Banks up into Delaware on Sept. 16, with more rain expected on Wednesday.

Delmarva Peninsula

A zone of heavy rain is impacting the Delmarva Peninsula, with the steadiest rainfall observed from Norfolk to Salisbury, Maryland. Some areas have received over four to five inches of rain, while Washington, DC, which has experienced drought conditions, is seeing some relief with up to an inch of rainfall. Flood alerts, including flash flood warnings and coastal flooding advisories, are in effect due to excess water and strong onshore winds, particularly around the Chesapeake Bay and Northampton County, Virginia.

The rain is expected to continue, shifting slightly north, but will not reach drought-affected regions in central and northern New England. Areas such as Rodanthe and Nags Head in North Carolina have seen isolated totals of up to eight inches. While some regions benefit from the rainfall, others, including New York and Connecticut, are expected to remain mostly dry, and drought conditions persist in parts of the northeast.

Heavy rain and coastal flooding in the Delmarva area

Let's look at the radar. You can see that this zone of heavy rain is most persistent from the Norfolk area up into Salisbury, Maryland. That's basically the area where the steadiest rain continues to drive on in. Meanwhile, we have another zone approaching DC where we've had a significant drought. Only 19% of your average rainfall since August 1st has fallen in DC. And we're gonna get a pretty good shot in the arm here with some improvements to our drought situation with the rain like this. You can see up to an inch in DC, but over four inches and even over five inches have been experienced in some areas here farther to the south. So the rain's gonna slowly be lifting north. We still have many different types of flood alerts. Rainfall related flood watch for some. Coastal flooding is a concern. We've had a two to three foot excess of water above your typical high tide because of the onshore winds. And then we have a flash flood warning on the north side of the enclosure of the Chesapeake Bay. So this includes areas around Northampton County of Virginia with a flash flood warning. Tomorrow, the rain's going to continue to fall pretty steadily in an area just barely north of where it's been today. So today's heaviest rain, we kind of highlighted the area from Salisbury down into extreme northeast North Carolina. Tomorrow, this just slides about two or three counties north and that's about it. Not much movement. Unfortunately, the area of drought in the interior northeast is not going to get much relief here. But many of the areas that saw these isolated five, six inches of rain have been near Rodanthe in North Carolina. You could see our Nags Head four to eight inch range there. Meanwhile, the rain continues to fall to the north up into Virginia Beach where hour after hour, more neighborhoods are creeping up to and above four inches for the storm. Up into Richmond, we're forecasting two to four inches of rain. Ocean City will probably see an inch or two. And I'm going to soon show you the future radar. You're going to be probably unimpressed by how this looks by Thursday. So again, it's pretty decent rain for some. It never makes it up into Maine. It never makes it to Vermont. Maybe a sprinkle or two in Southern New Hampshire, but no real benefits here where the drought has been significant up in Central and Northern New England. So here we are, pretty healthy looking storm with a strong onshore wind, coastal flooding during high tide. By 8 a.m. tomorrow, you can see it becomes a little more fragmented. Still some locally heavy rain from Richmond and Petersburg up into areas around Williamsburg and even into the area around Baltimore, maybe Easton, Maryland, 5 p.m. tomorrow. Some decent rain, but this really begins to fizzle by Thursday. Look at this, kind of a disappointment for New York and for Connecticut here, as this really never makes it in. We're going to be warm, consistently warm, west of I-81 and dry Miami at Buffalo here in an AFC East matchup Thursday night football. We look dry, pretty nice weather for football there into Buffalo, but we turn cooler behind this and the drought continues for many of us here.
