At least 30 villagers have been killed and several others are missing after gunmen raided a village in northern Nigeria’s Niger state, police said Sunday, the latest in a cycle of deadly violence in the conflict-hit region. Story by Simon Moritz.

At least 30 people were killed and numerous others, including children, were abducted when gunmen attacked Kasuwandaji village in Niger state, Nigeria. The attackers set fire to a market, looted shops, and targeted villagers regardless of religious background.

Officials stated that the violence was indiscriminate, with victims including traders, farmers, parents, and schoolchildren from both Muslim and Christian communities. The Nigerian government suspects the attackers may be terrorists fleeing U.S. military operations in northern Nigeria and has pledged to bring those responsible to justice.

Gunmen set a market alight before looting shops for food on Saturday. In addition to those killed, several kidnappings were also reported. All the children were taken, even the smallest one. All five of my children were there. Nothing remains." Gangs, called bandits in Nigeria, carry out kidnappings for ransom throughout the country, though Niger state has been the hardest hit. In December 2025, over 250 students and staff of St. Mary's Catholic School were freed after they were abducted from a nearby village in November. Though the U.S. struck several targets with apparent links to the Islamic State in northern Nigeria on Christmas following President Donald Trump's claims of persecution of Christians in the country, Abuja reported that the violence on January 4th was indiscriminate. The bullets did not choose victims based on religion. Those killed and those abducted were traders, farmers, parents, schoolchildren from both Muslim and Christian backgrounds. A spokesperson for Nigerian President Bola Tenerbu said in a statement that the gunmen may have been terrorists fleeing from the north following U.S. intervention in the region and vowed to bring them to justice.
