The U.S. government is at risk of a shutdown after the Senate rejected a short-term funding bill passed by the House, which included additional security funding. Both Democratic and Republican proposals failed to gain enough support, leaving Congress at a stalemate. With both chambers out for the week due to a holiday, there is limited time to reach an agreement before the funding deadline. Democratic leaders have requested a meeting with President Trump to discuss bipartisan solutions and healthcare provisions, but it remains unclear if such a meeting will occur. The situation remains unresolved, with uncertainty over whether Congress will reconvene in time to prevent a shutdown.

All right, so let's move to Capitol Hill. The clock is ticking for Congress to pass a spending bill to try to avert a government shutdown. This, of course, comes after two competing measures failed in the Senate on Friday. Now Democrats are pushing for a meeting with President Trump. CBS News correspondent Nicole Killian joins us now from Capitol Hill. Walk us through how we got to this stalemate. Well, Reid, how much time do you have? You know, I guess the short answer here is that, you know, lawmakers knew they were starting to bump up against this deadline at the end of the month to fund the government. Normally they try to or should be trying to fund the government through appropriations bills, but typically they can't have those all teed up in time. So that's why sometimes these short-term funding measures or CRs are required. So that being said, what we saw happen late last week is that the House passed a short-term continuing resolution to fund the government through mid-November. It also included some extra money for security for lawmakers, the judicial and executive branches. But then when it came over here to the Senate, they voted it down. Primarily Democrats are the ones who didn't want to support the measure. And then they offered up a countermeasure, which also failed. Fast forward to today, both chambers are out for the entire week because of the Jewish holiday. So it's unclear what the path forward is here. We do know the Senate will likely come back next week, which only gives them about a day or two to deal with this. Leader Thune has said he may bring up that measure that cleared the House again. But the House has canceled their votes next week, and they will more than likely not come back before this deadline expires at the end of the month. All right. So I want to ask you, Democratic leaders Schumer and Jeffries, they do want a meeting with the president. Will that happen? It remains to be seen. I mean, look, you know, part of this is the Democrats feel like any path forward has to be done in a bipartisan way. That's kind of the point they've been trying to make. And so that's also what they articulated in a letter over the weekend to the president, basically saying that they believe that, you know, what passed the House was a Republican bill in essence. You know, the demands that they are putting forth is that they really want to this issue of health care to be addressed, and they want some guarantees, whether that is rolling back those Medicaid cuts in the big, beautiful bill and extending the subsidies that are due to expire at the end of the year under the Affordable Care Act, which they argue could raise premiums. So they want to make sure there's some type of extension. Republicans are open to that, but they don't necessarily think it needs to be dealt with in this government funding bill. So that's what Democrats are asking for. The president over the summer had indicated he may be willing to sit down with leaders Schumer and Jeffries, but in the same breath, he has also said, you know, it doesn't really matter what I do or say, they're going to vote against it. So I don't know. Will there be some willingness on the part of the president to sit down with the Democrats? Probably not, which means this stalemate is likely to continue.
