A German court has addressed the case of Jian Ji, a Chinese-born former parliamentary researcher for far-right lawmaker Maximilian Krah of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. Ji is accused of acting as a foreign agent since 2002, allegedly passing sensitive information to Chinese intelligence, including dossiers on EU trade, internal party matters, and Chinese dissidents in Europe. 

Another defendant, Jackie X, reportedly provided Ji with passenger lists and details about weapons deliveries to Ukraine and Israel. The case underscores Germany's vulnerability as a logistics hub and raises questions about the country's ability to counter foreign espionage. Krah, the MP who employed Ji, faces separate charges of accepting bribes from Russia and China, which he denies.

This is the man prosecutors say led a double life. By day, Chinese-born Jian Ji was a parliamentary researcher. But by night, he was sending secrets to Chinese spies. From the view of the public prosecutor's office, the case is an example of China's extensive interest in spying on the political, military and economic interests of Germany. We therefore consider the case to be particularly serious. Ji is accused of working as a foreign agent since 2002. In 2015, while running an export-import company, he befriended far-right lawmaker Maximilian Krah. And when Krah was elected to the European Parliament to represent the alternative for Germany, he asked Ji to work for him. He was, in a very intelligent way, a little bit scurril. And maybe I like people who are both intelligent and scurril, who are a little bit out of the box. Judges heard how Ji used his access to obtain hundreds of documents. He created dossiers on topics from EU trade with China and power struggles within the AfD to Chinese dissidents in Europe. Krah told the court that Ji was a prolific note-taker who could recall details of conversations months later. Did you never wonder why a Chinese-born businessman wanted to work for a far-right party in Germany? Did that never cross your mind? Because trade, trade, trade. I do trade policy. A second defendant, Jackie X, worked for a logistics firm at Leipzig airport. She sent Ji passenger lists and details about German and US weapons deliveries to Ukraine and Israel. Germany is a logistics hub, so this makes Germany an extremely important intelligence target for hostile actors, regardless of the political set-up. So it is this strategic, this geo-strategic position that makes Germany such a worthwhile target. Krah is facing separate charges that he accepted bribes from Russia and China via Ji. The investigation is politically motivated. It's a witch hunt. Are they going to find something? No, of course they don't find something. What they find is clear. They find bills from a law firm to a client. If found guilty, Krah faces up to five years in prison. Both cases raise questions for Germany about its resilience in the face of attempted espionage and the best way to prevent politicians potentially falling prey to hostile foreign influences.
