Leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and other members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) convened in Doha to address a recent attack on Qatar, reportedly carried out by Israel as its conflict spreads across six countries. The summit resulted in a pledge from GCC members to reassess and activate joint defence mechanisms, as well as calls for sanctions and a review of diplomatic and economic ties with Israel.

The gathering, which included countries typically seen as regional rivals, issued a non-binding communique urging Gulf nations to suspend military supplies and consider further measures. Notably, some signatories of the Abraham Accords, such as the UAE, Bahrain, and Morocco, remained silent, and the Saudi Crown Prince did not address the summit. Despite strong statements, previous resolutions have not halted ongoing Israeli military actions in Gaza and Lebanon.

This hall represents nearly a third of the UN General Assembly. Unlike the annual UN event, world leaders and heads of states from the 57-member bloc came together in less than a week to stand with Qatar and combine their shared anger into a collective response. The Gulf state was the latest to come under attack by Israel as its war has expanded to six countries. They're sending a negotiating team on one hand and they're trying to eviscerate the negotiation on the other. This has been the practice of the Israelis to this day. If bringing the war to a halt will be met with the release of their captives, it is not what they want. They aim to turn Gaza into a wasteland, uninhabitable by the Palestinians. Israel's attack brought together countries which were seen as regional rivals. And Gulf Cooperation Council members pledged to assess the GCC's defence posture and activate joint defence mechanisms and Gulf deterrent capabilities. Israel must be held accountable for its war crimes against humanity, creation of an Arab-Islamic task force. OIC members as a whole produced roughly a quarter of the world's energy and well over 40% of global crude output. The joint communique issued a non-binding call on rich Gulf nations to impose sanctions, suspend the supply, transfer or transit of weapons, ammunition and military materials and also to review diplomatic and economic relations. During the hours of speeches, the silence of the signatories of Abraham Accords, UAE, Bahrain and Morocco was notable. And despite his strong statements against the attack on Qatar, the Saudi Crown Prince also opted not to address this gathering, falling short of expectations from many Muslim capitals and Palestinians. Palestinians expect something more than just a statement of condemnation of Israel. What we need is real, true decisions about conducting boycott, divestment, sanctions on Israel. After what's been called a cowardly attack on a mediator and a fellow Arab-Muslim country, there's been a familiar chorus of condemnations and solidarity from a group that collectively represents about a quarter of the world's population and accounts for about a sixth of the global economy. An unprecedented attack by Israel brought together a near-unprecedented gathering of world leaders who represent nearly two billion Muslims. But previous statements and strong-worded resolutions have not been able to stop Israel, which continued to attack Gaza and Lebanon while the speeches were ongoing in Qatar.
