Some children have been evacuated to countries such as Jordan, Egypt, the UAE, and Qatar, where they can receive treatment unavailable in Gaza due to destroyed hospitals and shortages. Despite international efforts to evacuate and treat the ill and injured, tens of thousands still await assistance, and some have died while waiting for care.

Gazans of all ages lack food and medicine

They have congenital diseases, cancer. Many have seen their lives shattered by crippling injuries. Yet these children consider themselves almost lucky. They made it out of Gaza. Tens of thousands of others in a similar state are still waiting. This group was evacuated to Jordan. My son is 15. He's been suffering from total paralysis since birth and brain atrophy. His sister, 13, also has cancer, which she got during the war about four months ago because of the missiles that were bombing us, in addition to malnutrition and other things. My daughter was injured in an Israeli strike. Shrapnel hit her head, causing a skull fracture and complete aphasia. It also left her right hand and right leg nearly paralysed. Treating them in Gaza was impossible due to the lack of medicine and the fact that Israel destroyed most of the enclave's hospitals in its war with Hamas. As Israel presses on with its offensive, threatening to take over more and more areas and pushing Gazans to small sections in the territory, tens of thousands of ill and injured children have been hoping to be evacuated. Some have died while waiting for treatment. Egypt, the UAE and Qatar have been taking in children since the early stages of the war. Jordan has started its current evacuation program in February. Other countries, including European ones, have stepped up their own medical evacuations in recent weeks.

The Trump administration is planning expanded immigration operations in Chicago next week, two Department of Homeland Security sources tell CBS News. Camilo Montoya-Galvez reports.
