In 2023, U.S. President Joe Biden's defining foreign policy crisis seemed to be the Russia-Ukraine war. Biden also focused on careful diplomacy with China. But on October 7, Hamas launched its attack on Israel, and since then, Washington's agenda has shifted.

If there is a Joe Biden doctrine, it hasn't been evident as the president spent the past year managing overlapping foreign crises. He hosted Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky twice in three months, as both men made a plea to the Republican-controlled House of Representatives to greenlight a $50 billion aid package for Kyiv, which would bring the total U.S. contribution to well over $100 billion since February 2022. That package is stalled as lawmakers on the right grow weary of funding what is likely turning into a war of attrition. Putin is banking on the United States failing to deliver for Ukraine. We must, we must, we must prove him wrong. Ukraine was primarily one of the objectives of the U.S. to undermine, weaken Russia. There were people who even spoke of, you know, a dismantling of Russia. And so there was a clear policy position. The United States right now is very much concerned about the rise of China and the return of Russia. The United States is very much concerned about the changing in their positions of the, you know, within the international community and the roles that these two countries are playing. In February, the U.S. shot down what it said was a Chinese spy balloon, prompting a breakdown in military-to-military communications between the superpowers. Not long after, Taiwan's president arrived in the U.S. after Beijing urged the speaker of the House not to meet with her. It wasn't until November that Biden met face-to-face with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, to attempt a reset of relations. But that highly anticipated summit was overshadowed in the international sphere by Israel's weeks-long bombardment of Gaza. The self-described devout Zionist, Biden went all-in for Israel after the Hamas attack on October 7, and is still not stepping back. I think this administration maybe went overboard. I think the president going over there, every week senior officials going over there, the sending of two aircraft carriers, sending of nuclear submarine, the sending and providing of intelligence, the providing of, you know, backing in the international fora. I think all of these are very significant. And perhaps other administrations might not have gone as far as this one. Lobbying can see a policy shift. TRT World obtained this recording from a Zoom call between Muslim Americans and their elected representative in the state of Connecticut. I have never had a visit, never once. I've been doing this for 15 years by a pro-Palestinian group. And the reason I would love to talk more about that is because, you know, the Palestinians have very legitimate claims, and in times and places have been subject to brutal injustice. And yet there is nobody telling their story. Domestic pressure and dissent from inside government has, however, impacted the administration's language. I want them to be focused on how to save civilian lives.
