Maria asked me to go with her to get food aid from GHF. She had no other choice, she had nothing left to feed her children. But after hours of waiting, chaos erupted. Israeli forces opened fire on all of the women on the site. I shouted at Maria to run and in the chaos we were separated. Later I got a phone call. They told me she had been shot in the neck and she didn't survive. Maria Sheikh El-Aid, a 40-year-old mother of seven, was killed while trying to feed her children. She was the only provider after the death of her husband. Now her seven children are left with no parents and no certainty about what comes next. Since my mother died, I can no longer bear living in the tent. I don't know how to go on without her. My youngest sibling is still waiting for her. He didn't cry or say a word since she was killed, except she is coming back. I don't know what to do. Now her children wake up each day without her. They have lost not only the mother, but the only person who could shield them from the crushing weight of war and hunger. Maria's seven children now live in a tent with their aunt Chawla, caught between mourning and survival. In Gaza, even a mother's final act of love can become a death sentence. This road is known locally as the road of no return. Witnesses say private security forces attacked women who came seeking food using pepper spray and electric shocks, leaving them forced to flee empty-handed back to their children.
