Forensic teams are carefully documenting and identifying the remains, allowing families to finally say goodbye in dignity and ensure proper remembrance. The transfer is seen as an important step for families seeking closure and a permanent resting place for those lost during the war.

Salil Durra breaks down in tears as she finally recognizes her husband, more than two years after the war took him. During Israel's war on Gaza, displaced families buried their loved ones in temporary graves, forced to do so as bombardment echoed overhead. For many, this meant saying goodbye without seeing their final resting place. After being forcibly displaced from eastern Gaza to Gaza City, Salil's family was shattered by a sudden Israeli attack. It killed her husband and two children. Her husband's body was later recovered and buried in a makeshift cemetery. I'm relieved that it's been confirmed he is my husband. I wanted to see him but I wasn't sure and I was afraid. What would I have done if it wasn't him? His features were clear. I am happy that I will be able to bury my husband in his rightful grave. Forensic teams say the work is carefully documented as they try to identify the bodies recovered from the temporary cemetery. The temporary cemetery contains between 40 to 50 bodies. The initial count of unidentified bodies ranged from 13 to 20. We conduct a preliminary examination before transferring them to Shifa Medical Complex Forensic Department where full documentation and identification markers are recorded. Civil defense say recent heavy rains and flooding accelerated the need to transfer these graves as the weather had begun to damage the temporary sites. There are several factors that changed the condition of this temporary cemetery. Heavy rains and soil shifts, as well as reports from residents about stray animals disturbing the graves, meant some families couldn't recognize their loved ones. Some could only identify them by personal belongings or clothing. Now families can say goodbye in dignity and preserve the memory of those they lost. For families here, official cemeteries are more than just plots of land. They are the only place where their loved ones can finally rest, where names are remembered and where memories survive despite the war that tried to erase them.
