Officials attribute the increase in departures from Gambia to heightened maritime patrols in Senegal, Mauritania, and Morocco, which have pushed migrant vessels to leave from further south. The Atlantic Ocean route from West Africa to the Canary Islands remains one of the world's deadliest migration paths, with tens of thousands attempting the journey in recent years.

Gambian officials say this has prompted the activation of special operations teams to respond decisively. Tens of thousands of people, most of them young, have tried to reach Europe from West Africa in recent years, mainly via the Canary Islands, on overcrowded and often dilapidated boats. The Atlantic Ocean migration route used by West Africans is one of the world's deadliest.
