Last-ditch talks between French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou and party leaders from across the political spectrum have now finished without any breakthrough, all but sealing Bayrou's fate of losing a confidence vote next week.

The French Socialist Party has announced it will vote against the prime minister in an upcoming no-confidence motion, following unsuccessful talks with François Bayrou and other political leaders. The Socialists stated their position was irreversible and reiterated their opposition to the prime minister's proposed policies.

Without an absolute majority in Parliament, the prime minister had sought support from both the Socialists and the far-right National Rally, offering policy concessions. However, these efforts were unsuccessful, and the prime minister is now expected to lose the confidence vote. President Emmanuel Macron may need to appoint a new prime minister, potentially from the centre-left, as previous centre-right premiers have struggled to work with the divided Parliament.

Even before his meeting with François Bayrou, Olivier Faure had made no secret of his intentions, calling the Socialist Party's position irreversible. An hour-long meeting at Bayrou's office produced no miracles. The Socialists hammered the last nails into the Prime Minister's coffin. We came here today out of Republican courtesy, because the Prime Minister invited us. And we came to reiterate that we're proposing a different path to the one he's proposing. He reiterated that he disagrees with us. So we have two opposing projects. That's legitimate on his part, and it's legitimate on ours. And with that, a week of consultations between Bayrou and political leaders of all stripes was closed. Without an absolute majority in Parliament, the Prime Minister needed the support of either the Socialists, which President Emmanuel Macron had encouraged, or of the National Rally. Earlier this week, the Prime Minister reached out to the far-right party, saying he was prepared to scrap his plan to cancel two public holidays and tighten the conditions for foreigners to obtain state medical aid. But it proved too little, too late. He chose to press the eject button and hold consultations after the fact. Clearly things are going the wrong way around. The outcome is that, despite the support of centre-right Républicain MPs, Bayrou seems destined to lose the 8th of September confidence vote, which he himself called for. Leaving President Macron to choose a new Prime Minister, possibly from the centre-left, after his last four centre-right premiers failed to work with a fragmented Parliament. In the event, the leader of the Républicain Parliament group, Laurent Wauquiez, said Thursday that his group would not censor either a Socialist or a National Rally-led government in order to avoid more instability.

A powerful aftershock struck eastern Afghanistan late on Thursday night. More than 2,200 people have already died the quake. Rescue crews are still searching remote villages, but rescue efforts are hampered by rough terrain and aftershocks. The World Food Programme says food stocks are running low and could be exhausted within weeks.
