Paris prosecutors have launched an investigation into the Australian-owned video platform Kick following the online death of Frenchman Raphael Graven who endured days of livestreamed abuse.

French prosecutors have opened an inquiry into the streaming platform Kick after a livestreaming marathon ended in the death of a participant. The deceased had reportedly been subjected to abuse and humiliation by two other streamers in front of a large online audience. Authorities are investigating whether Kick violated laws requiring platforms to remove illegal content and are examining if the platform knowingly broadcasted attacks on personal integrity. An autopsy has ruled out foul play, but investigations continue to determine the exact cause of death.

But it was the acts of abuse and humiliation during a 12-day streaming marathon on QIC that have caused outrage in France and calls for action. For months, the deceased had been abused and humiliated by two other streamers, Naruto and Safin, in front of tens of thousands of viewers. QIC is accused of violating a 2004 law that requires platforms to remove clearly illegal content. Tuesday, the Paris prosecutor also announced the opening of an investigation to examine if QIC knowingly broadcast videos of deliberate attacks on personal integrity. Investigations in the southern French city of Nice continue to try and determine the cause of death. An autopsy last week has already ruled out foul play.
