In Saint-Denis, where the mayor is ready to return the flag the prefect asked to be removed, residents are divided. Basically, I'm against it, to avoid tensions on either side. It allows us to show our solidarity with the Palestinian people. Outgoing Interior Minister Bruno Routaillot is opposed to the measure, citing court rulings which state these flags violate the principles of the neutrality of public services. The leftist mayor of Corbeil-Essence disagrees that this is a question of government neutrality. The republic is never neutral. The republic defends values, it defends principles. And besides, I'm being asked to remove the Palestinian flag, but not the Ukrainian flag. Where's the consistency? Meanwhile, representatives of the Jewish community are appealing to Olivier Faure. I don't remember hearing Olivier Faure ask for portraits of the hostages to be displayed in town halls, or even ask for the flags of countries that France has recently recognized – I'm thinking of Kosovo or South Sudan – to be flown over town halls. So will the socialist mayors listen to their leader? In San Juan, the mayor has another plan. Obviously, we will display the Palestinian flag loud and clear, along with the peace flag and the Israeli flag. It's not Israelis versus Palestine. It's only those who defend peace versus those who defend war. It's a hot-button issue that local officials will need to decide for their communities.
