The number of animals brought in nearly doubled in the first week of July, with many requiring rehydration and care, particularly young birds like swifts that are vulnerable during nesting season.

The heatwave has coincided with critical periods for wildlife, causing chicks to fall from nests and leading to more cases involving birds such as swans and hawks, as well as small mammals like hedgehogs. France's average temperature has already risen by 1.8°C above pre-industrial levels, and projections indicate further warming, which is expected to make the environment increasingly challenging for local wildlife and vegetation.

It's not just humans that are suffering from sweltering heat. Here at the Faune-Alphard wildlife shelter near Paris, wild animals are receiving treatment like rehydration. In the first week of July, the centre received almost twice as many animals as usual. The heat wave arrived early, coinciding with nesting time for many animals, especially birds, for example swifts. These are birds that nest under roofs and in a heat wave it gets really hot like a furnace. So the chicks approach the edge to breathe and they fall. Other birds such as swans and hawks and small animals like hedgehogs have been brought in, with their number spiking every time there's a heat wave. A lot of animals get hospitalised, especially young ones. There's a lot of swifts. It's a lot of work for the keepers to tend to these babies and feed them. France has already warmed by 1.8 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and by 2050 is expected to be 2.7 degrees hotter than in 1900. That will mean a less habitable environment for wildlife that France is currently home to, as well as for vegetation.
