Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has announced plans to build another immigrant detention center, dubbing it the "Deportation Depot." The facility will be in North Florida.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has revealed plans to establish a second immigration detention center in the state. The new facility, called the 'Deportation Depot,' will be located at the vacant Baker Correctional Institution near Jacksonville, which has been closed since 2021 due to staffing shortages. The site is close to Lake City Gateway Airport, which is expected to facilitate deportation flights. 

The announcement follows a federal judge's order to temporarily halt construction of the state's first detention center, known as 'Alligator Alcatraz,' in South Florida over environmental concerns. DeSantis stated that the additional capacity is needed to support federal immigration enforcement and expects the new center to be operational within weeks, with a capacity to hold approximately 1,300 detainees.

Earlier this morning, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced plans to build a second immigration detention center in that state. This announcement comes just days after a federal judge ordered construction on that so-called Alligator Alcatraz complex down in South Florida to stop. It's stopping for two weeks because of some environmental concerns. CBS News correspondent Chanel Call monitoring that story. Chanel, what did we learn this morning, friend? Well, hey Reid, good to see you. So this new detention facility will be at a prison in North Florida, and the governor has dubbed this Deportation Depot. Now this facility will be at the Baker Correctional Institution in Sanderson. This is about 45 miles west of Jacksonville. It's also notably near the Lake City Gateway Airport, which the governor today, Reid, said would basically enable deportation flights from there. The Miami Herald is also reporting, Reid, that this facility has actually been vacant for several years now. It was closed down back in 2021. That was when the state grappled with some severe staffing shortages. DeSantis saying today, this facility, once it's up and running, will be able to hold about 1,300 detainees. He also says it'll have a lot of the same services as the state's first detention center, which you mentioned, so-called Alligator Alcatraz. That is in the Florida Everglades. And as you mentioned, Reid, that is facing some litigation. DeSantis today justifying opening the second detention center by saying that President Trump's administration really needs this additional capacity to hold and to deport more immigrants. Listen. I think that this is gonna be value-added. There is a demand for this. As I said, I didn't wanna set up something and then have, like, 30 people here. I wanna make sure that I'm confident that it will be filled, and I'm confident that DHS is really stepping up to do the removal operations and to get the flights going. So the director of Florida's Division of Emergency Management, which is the agency essentially in charge of building these immigration facilities, is saying, Reid, that it could take two to three weeks to get this second Florida facility up and running. So we could see it operational in just a matter of weeks. Chanel, thank you so much.
