Prominent Liberal MP Chrystia Freeland has announced she’s leaving her cabinet post and doesn't intend to run in the next election. She is taking on a new role as Canada's new special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

Chrystia Freeland has resigned from her cabinet position after a 12-year career in public life, including roles as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Finance, and Deputy Prime Minister. She announced she will not run in the next federal election and has accepted the role of Canada's special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine. 

Freeland's departure comes after a history of both praise and criticism, including her work on renegotiating NAFTA and her vocal stance against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. While some political opponents have questioned her timing, sources indicate the decision was personal. Her new role in Ukraine is expected to be one of several future endeavours, and interim ministers have been appointed to cover her previous cabinet responsibilities.

I think that Chrystia is a great Canadian who broke a lot of barriers. She was our first female Finance Minister. But she's also faced criticism over the years, including being viewed by some as out of touch with Canadians' cost-of-living concerns. Nine months ago, Freeland abruptly resigned from Justin Trudeau's cabinet, then ran to replace him. I think part of her legacy will be bringing down Justin Trudeau. She also renegotiated a NAFTA deal and tussled with Donald Trump. She was terrible actually, she was a terrible person. Slava Ukraini! She's drawn the ire of Vladimir Putin too, landing on Russia's sanction list after repeatedly taking aim at Putin for invading Ukraine. President Putin has made a grave and historic error. Now the Prime Minister's asked Freeland to serve as Canada's new special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine. She's visited Ukraine, knows the President and has rallied Canadians to help. She knows the country, she has respect of the Ukrainian people, so I can't think of anything better than for her to be doing that. But the Conservatives' leader accuses Freeland of running away. She's probably trying to get out of town and as far away as possible before this disastrous November budget comes in. Sources say this is Freeland's personal decision and that she met with the Prime Minister about a month ago. She also wrote in her letter she's not leaving to spend more time with her family or because the burden of public office is too much to bear. And Ashley, we're learning more about when she's going to be leaving. Yeah, Adrienne. Sources tell CBC News and Radio Canada she will resign soon as an MP but a date hasn't been chosen yet. They also said her new role to help Ukraine will be just one of the tasks she plans to take on.
